From March 2025, BMW will start a number of incremental updates that improve the efficiency for the i5 Edrive40 and XDRIVE40 with a remarkable new technology. Is it enough to stay competitive? Let’s take a look.
The BMW i5 EDRIVE40 and XDRIVE40 both receive an upgrade thanks to revised inverter with silicium carbid (SIC) technology and improved wheel bearings. Together they contribute to a modest increase in area:
i5 edrive40:
- 19-inch wheels: 310 miles (+5%)
- 20-inch wheels: 300 miles (+8%)
- 21-inch wheels: 278 miles (+3%)
i5 XDrive40:
- 19-inch wheels: 278 miles (+5%)
- 20-inch wheels: 272 miles (+4%)
- 21-inch wheels: 259 miles (+4%)

How it is stacked: i5 against the competition
Although these profits are welcome, they are not pioneering-especially in a segment in which the range is still a top line specification. Let’s take a look.
| Model | EPA estimated area (approx.) | Remarkable attributes |
|---|---|---|
| BMW i5 Edrive40 | 300–310 mi | New SIC inverter technology, classic BMW driving dynamics |
| Audi A6 e-tron (est.) | ~ 300 mi (tbd) | Not yet sold; Dual engine expects with an elegant fastback design |
| Mercedes-Benz EQE 350+ | 305 mi | Hinter drive, soft |
| Lucid Air Pure RWD | 410 mi | Exceptional range, minimalist interior, limited brand awareness |
| Tesla Model S Dual Motor | 405 mi | Strong efficiency, wide loading network, aging interior fittings |
Range perspective:
The updated range of the i5 are competitive with Audi and Mercedes in the medium-sized luxury EV class, but still Delay Kluger and TeslaBoth remain the benchmarks for a complete electrical range. Tesla continues to dominate in the loading infrastructure and efficiency, while Lucid provides impressive numbers thanks to the ultra-low air resistance coefficient and proprietary drive architecture.

Drive experience:
This means that BMW retains a edge on which the driving dynamics are affected. Consistently observe the balanced chassis and the steering feeling of the i5 etwas, which cannot be said for the isolated EQE or the clinical efficiency of Teslas Model S. Audi’s A6 e-tron, a little is a wild card, although the final specifications are not yet confirmed.
Our attitude
BMW’s spring updates 2025 are clearly evolutionary and do not even fall under the category of a LCI (refresher with a medium cycle). Technically speaking, the reach improvements for the i5 are healthy and are probably appreciated by existing owners and new buyers alike. Nevertheless, the i5 continues from a purely point of view of the specification Trail Lucid and Tesla about efficiency and reachlargely with Audi and Mercedes in more traditional luxury benchmarks.
That is, for buyers who prioritize How A car drives more than just How far It drives that the i5 remains one of the appealing options in the Premium -V room. BMW’s strategy seems to concentrate on the refinement of the formula instead of redefining it – and in a segment in which the norm is quickly changed, this measured approach could more than appeal.
