The BMW M5 has had a long way since its modest beginnings in the 1980s. From naturally sucked straight-six engines to V10 Screamers and now an electrified V8 with two turbochargers, the M5 is still redefining. With the latest generation (G90), BMW sets the electrification, and after almost 1,000 miles behind the wheel, the first impressions are largely positive – with some remarkable considerations. We recently took over our long -term press car from 2025 BMW M5 G90 and it is now time to share the first impressions and insights into how it is to live with BMW’s first electrified M5. In this first evaluation we will mainly cover the daily driving characteristics of the new M5. Later we will examine his performance on the route and on the backroads.
Daily mobility: better than the F90 M5
One of the biggest questions in connection with the G90 M5 is whether the weight – almost £ 1,000 than the outgoing F90 – can be felt during daily driving. Surprisingly, the additional weight disappears in daily scenarios. In fact, comfort is particularly improved. The comfort mode of the G90 is balanced and avoids excessive softness or hardness. In sports, the journey of the previous generation is similar, while Sport Plus is just enough to improve mobility without feeling uncomfortable. The difference between standard mode and Sport Plus is now far more dramatic than in the F90, which highlights the versatility, which is introduced with electrification and adaptive suspension.
Despite the considerable weight gain due to the hybrid hardware, almost £ 5,400, it never feels cumbersome during the daily pendulum times or the motorway cruise. Instead, the G90 feels a more sophisticated and comfortable everyday car compared to its predecessor, the F90.

In the city I mainly use hybrid mode, with the car deciding the best drive strand option for me. However, I quickly switch to electrical mode in stop-and-go traffic so that I can fully exploit the maximum option for regenerative brake brakes. The Michelin PS5S tires (20-inch front, 21-inch rear), which are attached to this car, are noticeably calmer and smoother than the Hankook tires from my previous G90 M5 test, which improves daily viability. Interestingly, the G90 M5 feels more like a highly sporty, reduced 7er than the traditional RAW M5. In view of the BMW, which has never offered a proper M7, this M5 may be as close as we get and delivers luxury and refinement with impressive performance in a manageable package.
Surprisingly, BMW Level 2+ assisted motorway assistant and probably emphasizes that the M5 will remain a machine geared to driver. The hands -free pendant is limited to 40 miles per hour and only for a short duration, which increases its performance -oriented intentions.
Electrification: triple personalities
The electrification granted the G90 M5 two completely different personalities. On short travel-based trips in EV mode, it continues to glide quietly and whispered through traffic. Sometimes it sometimes feels like the i5 M60 sedan. I was particularly surprised at how fast and reaction it feels without the V8. However, switch to Sport Plus mode and the car is completely transformed. The throttle flap reaction sharpens, the chassis dynamics become taut, and suddenly they torture the tires with this force and a heavy nose.
However, the transition between electrical and petrol current is not always silky, especially in colder weather. There is a slight vibration and an increase in the rumbel while the V8 wakes up, a gentle but noticeable handover between battery and internal engine. Even in the pure EV mode, the floss of the accelerator pedestals causes the V8 to break in – albeit with a light but tangible delay. Overall, however, the plug-in hybrid drive train is more sophisticated than in the XM.
The flexibility of the BMW drive train shines through the programmable M1 and M2 keys. I configured M1 for moderate, ice -made driving that maintains a smooth, quiet experience, while M2 puts the car with maximum performance, stiffer suspension and increased reactionability in full performance mode. Essentially you get three different cars in one: a relaxed electric cruiser, a dynamic but comfortable limousine and a full performance monster.
Brakes and steering
BMW from North America has suspended our test car with the 8,500 million carbon ceramic brakes. Although expensive – and although it was not intended to pursue the car when it was mine – I really appreciate its benefit: dramatically reduced brake dust. As someone who carefully lowers the cleaning of the wheels, less brake dust satisfies my obsessive -compulsive disorder. Yes, you need somewhat longer warm -up times compared to steel brakes, but it is a compromise that is worth making everyday cleanliness. If money is not an object. I would say that if you live near some canyons, it would be another good reason to get the ceramic brakes.
The rear steering is another outstanding function, especially if it drives in a busy city like Chicago. It significantly improves urban maneuverability, which increases parallel parking spaces and close change. In particular, it also reduces the rotary radius and surprisingly surprisingly surprisingly surprisingly, given its size, the G90 M5.
Styling and presence
The design didn’t leave me at first. The square, aggressive appearance initially felt polarizing and even prompted an open conversation with designer Jose Casas about this styling direction. After life with the new M5, however, the quirky and brave look grown me considerably and is particularly talks, especially with non-BMW enthusiasts.
Interior and technology
Inside, the new 2025 BMW M5 offers a comfortable, technical environment with many whistles and bells and lights. However, interior quality could be better. When using the piano box, BMW remains on the dashboard, the door thresholds and the bumpers, which quickly become fingerprint magnets and are frustrating for scratches.
The latest iDrive 8.5 Infotainment system is finally present – disrespectful, intuitive and quick to navigate, despite its complexity. Although it does not yet contain BMW’s upcoming large -speaking model -based iDrive X, learning the voice command structure, when you have learned the voice command structure, will be quick adjustments to a second nature.
Practicality and family use
The seating comfort remains solid, although the passengers behind the F90 have a little less space – probably due to the positioning of the battery under the floor. Nevertheless, it was easy to find two child seats, and the M5 stays practical for family use, although it is a little closer. Nevertheless, adaptation to two child seats did not represent a challenges and reaffirmed his viability as a family-friendly performance sedan.
Last initial thoughts
Almost 1,000 miles are positive overall. While the raw edge of previous M5 generations is missing, the new G90 M5 has matured into an extraordinary daily driver that seamlessly connects luxury, comfort and electrified performance. If every day comfort and versatility are priorities, this is an excellent choice. For those who are looking for a pure track-oriented weapon, however, consider an F90 M5 competition or an M5-CS instead. Speaking of the latter, it is still the best M5 that has ever been done.
