The BMW IX made a courageous statement about the electrical ambitions of the brand when it was published in 2021. In contrast to BMW’s other EV offers, the IX was set up on an electrical platform (CLAR) and the EV revolution of the brand was listed. Like every brand new product, it was not without mistakes. For 2026, BMW starts an LCI (life cycle impulse) for the IX, which aims to remedy the initial feedback and at the same time offer more power and greater reach. Does it deliver? We climbed the wheel of an early prototype to find out.

Exterior changes have a major influence
The design of the IX has always been split, especially at the front, where the oversized kidney cricket from BMW dominates the face. The radiator grille remains for 2026, but subtle changes to the front bumper and surrounding elements require its visual effect.
When we approached the new, unexplored prototype (which we unfortunately cannot show you), it was immediately clear that BMW had taken customer feedback to heart. Styling is sharper in some areas and in other soft, which creates a more coherent and more sophisticated look. There is an undeniable connection to the NEE class concept cars, especially in the newly designed headlights that reflect the dynamic properties of the future design language of BMW. In the meantime, the new M Sport Pro package gives subtle details -numerous shiny black cladding -that give the car a more aggressive edge.
Fortunately, you don’t have to jump for the M Sport Pro to enjoy an improved appearance. BMW has refined the previously available sports package by producing most elements of body colors and standard in the entire area.
Elsewhere, the exterior of the brave and futuristic design language of the IX remains loyal. I love it or hate it, the silhouette remains immediately recognizable, and the updates ensure that the 2026 model is not far from the original design view.

Efficiency: small changes, great effects
With a combination of software updates and hardware optimizations, BMW has achieved an increase in range in all IX models by approximately 10%. The XDRIVE50 is now the XDRIVE60 with 536 hp and an estimated 330 miles EPA range. At the top of the installation, the XDRIVE60 M60 becomes the XDRIVE70 with 650 hp and an estimated 315 miles. Even the entry-level XDRIVE45 now offers 402 hp and 285 miles EPA range. The charging speeds remain at 195 kW for the two higher tribes and 175 kW for the XDRIVE45.
How has BMW improved both the performance and range? Engineers focused on efficiency with revised drive software, improved processors and other optimizations. The charge of cold weather has also been improved, and the IX now offers an optional heat pump to increase efficiency at lower temperatures.

Handling: familiar DNA, new commitment layers
Driving the original IX could feel incoherent. The M60 delivered an immense speed, but the flat, lower-sized seats and the lack of feedback had the pilot of the car controlled more like a spaceship than to drive a high-performance BMW. BMW clearly listened to the criticism and addressed almost every pain point in the update 2026. Even the steering wheel is now optional.
The IX benefits from several suspensions upgrades. The wheel bearings have been revised, while other changes to chassis and electronics have improved the driving dynamics. A new hydraulic rear axle bearing improves driving comfort without affecting precision, which leads to a more smooth experience over rougher surfaces.

The optional M Sport brake system with Red Containers and M Logos offers sharper stop performance.
The changes on the street are subtle but meaningful. BMW has increased the separation between comfort and sports modes. The IX feels plush and composed in convenience, which makes the imperfections with ease. The steering remains light but precise, and the updated seats further improve comfort.
When you switch to sports mode, the dampers and weights are built up the steering, which makes the IX planted more and feels quick. While it is still not a canyon carver, the IX is surprising for a heavy electrical SUV. More than before, it is an ideal balance between performance and refinement for EV buyers who appreciate both luxury and commitment.

Interior: now with real sitting
The most important improvement in the 2026 IX is in the cabin. One of the biggest complaints about the outgoing model was its flat, lower -sized seats, which felt inadequate, especially for larger drivers. BMW has dissolved this with a new optional M multi -function seats and offers better side support and longer seat cushions. The result is a driving position that feels both sporty and courteous and enables them to concentrate on driving instead of adapting to comfort.
BMW has also expanded the inner material options. Buyers can now choose from Dynamica/Sensatec perforated upholstery or optional natural leather, which increases the premium feeling of the cabin. Other upgrades are a two-colored instrument plate, an M-specific equipment in dark silver and an anthracite headliner, especially for the M sports models.

An increase in standard and optional functions
BMW has equipped the updated IX with significantly more standard functions. Highlights include heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, an advanced alarm system and a Harman Kardon -Surround Sound system. The optional functions include a new light carpet greeting system that creates a futuristic effect when the drivers approach the vehicle.
The semi -autonomous functions of the IX have also been improved. The highway assistant now offers the functionality of level 2+, including an active trace change with a view to the lane to ensure that the drivers remain committed while using the system. In the meantime, the parking assistant enables you to park with your smartphone and maneuvering-one practical function for tight rooms.

Early judgment
The 2026 BMW IX is less about radical reinvention than more about thoughtful refinement. Through the treatment of important criticisms such as seating, improving efficiency and refining the interior and the outdoor area, BMW has transformed the IX into a more complete and more convincing product.
While it may still be able to share the opinions with its bold design, the 2026 IX now feels as if it has grown into its skin and offers a mixture of performance, luxury and the latest technology that becomes a bit more convincing. It took a few years, but BMW is slow, but steadily repeated in his view for the electrical future – and this time it is nailed much more of the details.
