If you’re not already overwhelmed by the sheer number of apps in the car, here’s another one to add to the list. In addition to the over 60 third-party apps already available in the ConnectedDrive Store, BMW Group UK is introducing the global player. The app offers a large selection of digital radio stations as well as playlists and podcasts.
Since it can be downloaded directly from the app store integrated into the infotainment system, no smartphone is required. Global player is not just limited to the new class SUV. It also works in all BMWs and MINIs equipped with the previous generation infotainment system. More than 180,000 vehicles equipped with OS 9 are already compatible with the latest in-car app, and BMW expects that number to exceed 300,000 by the end of the year once the iX3 hits the roads in 2026.
In the future, all models in the New Class will support the global player. The second-generation iX3 will soon be joined by the i3 sedan and iX4, scheduled to debut in 2026. It’s also worth noting that the New Class won’t only be available for electric vehicles. Essentially all new BMW models will fall under the NK umbrella, including the next 3 Series and the X5, which will switch to the iDrive X later this year. The upcoming facelift of the 7 Series will also be part of the expanded New Class family.

Global Player can do more than just stream live radio. Users can rewind and pause audio and video shows or browse thousands of podcasts and curated playlists directly from the center display. At an impressive 17.9 inches, the new iX3 has the largest touchscreen ever installed in a BMW Group vehicle. A subscription to BMW Digital Premium or MINI Connected Package is required to access the content.
Like most streaming apps, Global Player supports seamless switching between devices. This means you can start a podcast in the car and continue listening at home, picking up exactly where you left off as soon as you get out of the vehicle.
The growing number of in-car apps shows that modern vehicles are increasingly becoming oversized, rolling smartphones. The iDrive For those who want to pass the time in a more entertaining way, this feature is also available on iDrive 9.
