The second generation X4 isn’t long for this world. Production of the petrol versions has already ended and the diesel versions will be discontinued at the end of this month. There are no plans for another generation with a combustion engine. Why? Munich believes that the X2 now fills this role after its growth spurt in the second generation. However, if you’re planning on buying a new X4, an indirect electric successor is on the way.
These spy images confirm reports of an iX4 and reveal BMW’s first electric Sports Activity Coupe in the modern New Class range. The prototype lives up to that SAC label with a sloping roofline that wouldn’t be out of place on a real coupe.
The first spy photos show a sleek coupe-style SUV

Even though the test car is wrapped in camouflage, it cannot hide its bold profile, which gives it a sportier impression than its predecessor, the X4 “G02”. For those who like to follow BMW’s internal codes, the very first iX4 is believed to be known as the “NA7”. Unsurprisingly, the front half is reminiscent of the iX3 ‘NA5’, with most of the changes coming to the B-pillars towards the rear.
The lowered roof line makes the greenhouse significantly smaller. There’s still a quarter window, but it’s much smaller than the standard iX3. As expected, rear headroom and cargo space are compromised due to the coupe-like shape, but that’s exactly the case with coupe-style SUVs.
Familiar front, sportier rear – design in detail

A detail worth mentioning is the horizontal cutout in the tailgate spoiler, probably for the third brake light. It’s usually located at the top of the rear window, but BMW designers may be trying something new. Further highlights include powerful fenders and a fresh two-tone rim design.
The flush door handles have been adopted from the new iX3. For larger models like the next X5 and X7, BMW is switching to “winglet” handles integrated into the beltline for an even cleaner appearance. There is no silencer under the rear bumper: this X4 will be fully electric. At the front, the vertical kidney grille is hidden in plain view, while the active air flaps in the lower bumper remain fully visible.
Inside the BMW iX4 2027 – iDrive X and Panoramic Vision

Although the iX4’s sporty proportions are eye-catching, its interior shouldn’t surprise anyone. Expect a near-identical copy of the iX3’s cabin, meaning the iDrive rotary controller and most of the physical buttons are gone. Instead, the focus is on a 17.9-inch touchscreen.
The latest iDrive With the previous X4 still featuring iDrive 7, the iX4’s infotainment setup will be a big leap forward, for better or worse.
Since these are early prototypes, the debut is still a long way off. Since the iX3 was only recently introduced, the iX4 is expected to be presented next summer. According to rumors, production along with the iX3 will begin in November 2026 at the new BMW factory in Debrecen, Hungary.
