The first BMW M3 Electric is still two years away, but in the meantime BMW is pushing forward with its test processes. Prototypes of the ZA0 M3 EV can now be seen on the street in Germany and Sweden, so we have the opportunity to make its design. Admittedly, the test mules still have a heavy camouflage, including plastic cladding that usually hides the fine details and shapes. The accuracy of the renders is therefore limited to what can be observed with the naked eye.
Phygital design
At first glance, a word that describes this electrical rocket is “brutal”. According to the design instructions from the vision of the new class concept and the G50 3 series, which we reproduced some time ago with the vertical two light signature and the legendary glue frame secretly subtly subtle. In view of BMW’s sustainability focus on reducing chrome cladding, the new kidneys now reflect the grid network in a “phygital” style and create a futuristic 3D light effect. This includes the M3 badge, which can also be part of the light show.
The lower section reflects the styling of the new G90 M5 with its large trapeze recording and the characteristic central halving piece. On the sides of the attachment, the M3 integrates the triangular panels next to a carbon fiber splinter first on the NEE class concept. Instead of adding ventilation openings to the sides, the corners of the front fascia form seamlessly to absorb the dramatically filled fenders.
Minimalist design lines
The new side profile adheres to the minimalist recipe and eliminates all the door folds, handles and complicated character lines of the G20. The result is clean, streamlined surfaces that, in combination with the equipped fenders, create an unmistakable look with the latest mivision designs.
Apart from the line shown, which surrounds the lower window frame, a single character line flows gracefully along the lower section, inspired by the original E30, while shiny black rocker panels maintain a grounded appearance. The Hofmeister-Knick extends over the C-pillar and shows a embossed M logo that reflects the youngest M5 for a coherent family look.
A bold and aggressive back end
The rear design does not go unnoticed. From the typical L-shaped graphic, new slim, slim horizontal taillights with two vertical LED motifs, which hold the duality topic defined by the headlights. The combination of black spoiler, slim trunk lines and waterfall-like folds further refines the appearance, all inspired by elements that have been observed on the latest tarnished prototypes.
In the lower section, this render shows its most radical element. The lack of exhaust pipes makes a monstrous diffuser space that certainly turns the heads. Thanks to the central halving piece, the diffuser reflects the duality topic in the entire design and creates a coherent look.
