After three years of joyful top-down driving, I recently said goodbye to my 2023 BMW M440i XDrive Cabrio. Here is the reason why this underestimated drops may be one of the modern sizes of BMW.

I am in trouble with my wife. With good things and sometimes even bad it is difficult to say goodbye. This is the case of a very good thing that I recently sent to a new home: my 2023 BMW M440i XDRIVE convertible, a sip of a name for a really wonderful car.

In 2023 I checked the car and was so impressed that I added it to my garage. How many performance junkies I first wondered if I had the feeling that I had settled, because while the M440i was clearly a strong performer, it was not an adult M-car. For the first year of ownership or so, I regularly found my view of the M4 competition skill and was even more than once shortly before moving. But after a little this hot bloodness cooled down and life with the M440i sat down in familiarity and comfort.

I will save a comprehensive summary of the information from the car. In short, BMW’s ubiquitous B58 3.0L inline-6 ​​cylinder “M Twinpower Turbo” engine with 382 PS @ 5,800 rpm and 369 LB-FT at 1,800 rpm. It is reduced to 0-60 in 4.6 seconds and sent to electricity via the always implicit ZF 8-speed steptronic sports transmission. It is a solid engine and drive package that is difficult to owe, which is why it is probably noted over the years by a large part of the BMW list.

My wife particularly loved the car. It is design and appearance, especially its lively Tanzanite Blue II Metallic Color and Tacora Red Vernasca leather interior,, in contrast to the comment that could not stop criticizing the great kidney grille of the G20 series, only positive comments from spectators. And his general performance was effortless in the city and on spirited countries. My wife put the top on very possibilities, whereby the windows and the “neck scarf” blew on high, drizzle or snowflakes that bend over the disc panel for moist days. As she said more than once: “If you go at least 45 miles per hour, you won’t get any wet.”

But when I gave me the opportunity to acquire an assigned sports car from another German manufacturer, the realization that our garage had only so many camps, my normal new car excitement with the marriage was afraid of selling my spouse by selling “your car”. What I ultimately did. Because I’m stupid.

The case for BMW performance cars

While BMWS’s M-Sport series still causes heartburn in the online fan boys, they were nothing but a success in the actual driving world. Since vehicles from the motorsport division have come so far that their functional limits go far beyond the area of ​​road driving, not to mention their constantly increasing price tags, the M-Sport specification brings many of the unique elements of the M-range with more usable performance and unmistakable personality. And with the homogenization of the engine and gearbox range from BMW? What is the core of differentiation anyway?

I would argue that the top of the modern BMW M of the E92 M3 with its unique (and unique) sound and high-ranking V8 engine and twin clutch gearbox was critical elements that could only be had on this car in this car. Software and tuning alone did not distinguish it from their scholarship holders in the line -up. It is one of the few cars that I no longer regret, and a clean, miles -luminous version is one for which I am constantly on the viewpoint. Would BMW the Green-Light this car today? Doubtful, since the platform division and participation seems to rule the rest area.

This does not mean that I am immune to the wonderful surplus of an X5 m or the steroid bulldog stimuli of the current G87 m2 CS, but these are really Banzai versions of more pedestrian cars that add excessive plumage as a call to take a serious pleasure in the Hackn code. (And I will avoid mentioning the XM here because I have recently eaten.) But as a daily driver, these cars can tend to be exaggerated.

Possession in the real world: driving, comfort and technology

That brings me back to the BMW M440i XDrive Cabrio. His performance was sterling, it deals precisely and balanced, his suspension vote never, it is throaty, but not disgusting. And every quiet drive can be revived to extra-legal values ​​with a shift in sports mode and a train on the paddle slides. It was a golden retriever with a preference for losing it in the dog park and never having anything other than committed fun.

Technology, comfort and the iDrive 8 -debate

A strong element for me was the iDrive 8.0 of the car, the last version of the system before BMW changes to its 8.5-all-screen interface. In short, 8.0 was the final version with a touch of buttons and a central screen “human size”. I will generally spare a joke about the “screen ficification” of BMWS and modern automobiles, but it is enough to say that I’m not a fan, and I consider some of the design-back backs of Allglas-Infotainment systems from certain manufacturers as a real positive. But unfortunately BMW all-in went, and I will go on board my latest takeover of an IX show if the interface and the overall package are well done, which is certainly BMW. (Fairness is well dissolved and react quickly, albeit a bit cumbersome.) But the mix of the 8.0s from buttons and light screen interfaces hit me as just right, and I will complain about the loss of the more tactical interface while this car leaves us.

For over three years of owner, the car was nothing like a problem. Apart from the regular service, the only tiny Nit was a noticeable knock that developed the top that was developed during the increase. A single staccato “clings” on one side of the mechanism when the top went through the tip of the removal. My local BMW center checked it out, agreed that the sound had developed since new, but that it was still within the specification and suggested that I keep a close eye (ear?) If it got worse. What it never did. In addition, the folding wind demonstrator is honestly a bit of a pita to install and also traffic jam, but this is endemic to all wind turbines on 2+2 convertibles. Since the only regular user of the back seat were our dog and our bags of food, I installed the deflexcor most of the time. Apart from these little problems, the car was flawless.

The general decline of convertibles, both in the market recording and in the model availability in general, is a disappointment because I believed for a long time that a day with the top -down day corresponds to at least one week of driving with the top -up. But I understand that mine is not a view that is shared by everyone who would confirm BMW’s sales figures. However, the paradoxical platform and the flexibility provided by the new EV platforms seem to ask exactly this type of differentiation. Why not an iteration with soft-top seekind or even a bizarre convertible SUV shape to round off the model list?

Impractical? Perhaps. But less impractical than an X6 m? Hope here.

My M440i certainly fit in the calculation for a useful all -rounder, and our Doberman Stella loved to sit down in the back seat, smell all smells and pick up the world around them (although not so much with the effort). The car had surprising load space, although the hard plastic cubby, which protected the upper mechanism when the top was withdrawn, ate considerably into the available storage space. But hey, with the top down the back seat was completely accessible from above, so don’t worry.

The end of an era – and what comes next

Our BMW M440i XDRIVE Cabrio will certainly be remembered, and the fact that there are two of these cars of the G20 4 series in our parking garage in a condominium keeps the feeling of feeling fresh (and my wife gives the continued opportunity to remember the same). It is a great car that is missing from BMW’s portfolio if a worthwhile successor does not make the line -up. It is not a bad decision to take a low -miles of one of them.
