The BMW group produces cars and engines in 32 factories around the world. The DEBRECEN location will be put into operation later this year and the manufacturing footprint is expanded further. In this case, the Leipzig page celebrates an important milestone. It was 20 years since the first car was rolled by the assembly line. Yes, these 3 Series sedan from the E90 generation.
The sports sedan was completed on March 1, 2005, and in the following two decades BMW made 3.75 million vehicles. Although there are older factories in the huge production network, the Leipzig website has a rich story. Here the i3 and i8 together with the company’s first production car were made with a layout in front of the company. The 2 series Active Tourer is built in addition to the mechanically related 1 series -fluiebheck- and 2 Series -Gran coupé.
The last vehicles with a layout in the rear wheel drive were assembled in 2021. Then the original 2-series coupé/convertible (F22/F23) and the M2 (F87) were switched off. The second generation model is only produced as a coupé (G42) in the factory in San Luis Potosi. The M2 (G87) is also made exclusively in Mexico.
But on the Leipzig page it’s not just about BMWS. In 2024 it was the group’s first factory to build BMWS and minis in the same line. Production was brought to the house for the third generation compatriot (U25). The assembly of its predecessor, the F60, was externalized in the VDL Nedcar Automotive Manufacturing Company in Born, Netherlands. The original compatriot (R60) was produced by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria.
When the youngest countryman was added to Leipzig location in September 2024, BMW introduced a third shift for the first time. The night shift added 900 jobs and brought the total amount to 6,800 employees. Last year there was a record in terms of production with 248,000 vehicles. The factory in the most populous city of Saxony has a maximum annual capacity of 350,000 vehicles. Around 1,300 cars are currently being produced there every day, 800 BMWs and 500 minis.
