When BMW introduced the new iX3 50 xDrive a few months ago, the company promised that an entry-level variant would follow. We have since learned that a cheaper model is coming to the US in early 2027. Unsurprisingly, Europe will get the basic version first.
Alexandra Landers, Global Head Product Communications at BMW, revealed the timing in an interview with Drive Magazine from Australia: “The rear-wheel drive version will be available for Europe at the end of next year.” She didn’t provide any details on the name, but it will probably be called iX3 40. What is certain is that it will use a single rear-engine as New Class EVs will not adopt front-wheel drive arrangements.
Although BMW has not yet confirmed this, this lower-end iX3 40 is expected to enter production at the Debrecen factory in July 2026. The xDrive variant with two engines will be added four months later. Both “40” models will likely use a battery smaller than the 108.7 kWh pack in the 50 xDrive. So don’t expect them to reach the original model’s claimed 500-mile (805-kilometer) WLTP range.

In addition, the iX3 range will be expanded to include an M Performance version next year. The M60 is expected to go into production in July, at the same time as the rear-wheel drive 40. It will certainly have dual-motor all-wheel drive and significantly more power than the 463 hp available in the iX3 50 xDrive. According to rumors, the power could reach 620-630 hp, but nothing has been confirmed.
A long-wheelbase version is also coming next year for China, where an even simpler rear-wheel-drive “30” could be offered. However, it’s still too early to say whether an iX3 30 will be sold elsewhere. By the end of 2027, BMW wants to round off the range with a full-fledged M model that should deliver at least 800 hp.
In addition to production in Hungary and China, BMW will also build the iX3 in Mexico. However, series production at the San Luis Potosi plant will not begin until 2027, and even then the US models will still come from Debrecen.
