The year did not start with the best grade for BMW on his home market. According to the preliminary registration figures, the shipments rose by 1.3% to 61,264 units. However, a deeper immersion in the data of the Federal Motor Transport Authority (Federal Motor Transport Authority or KBA) shows some interesting trends. While electric vehicles are still gaining traction, diesel popularity fades.
As early as the first quarter of 2023, Diesel accounted for 39.7% of BMW’s sales in Germany. Fast lead to Q1 2025, and this number has dropped to a little more than 30%. In the meantime, EVS move in the opposite direction. Pure electrical models made up 9.16% of sales in the first quarter of 2023, but increased to more than 19% in the past quarter. This means that almost one of BMW was sold by BMW by BMW on its home tape between January and March.
While many car manufacturers run diesel engines, BMW is not one of them. The diesel options are available from the 1 series and X1 to 7 series and X7. Heck, you can still buy an 840d 840D in 2025. The decline in the diesel shares is therefore not due to the fact that fewer models are offered. It is a clear sign that the customer preferences change towards EVS.

In fact, BMW registered more than 10,000 fully electric vehicles for the first time in a single quarter in Germany. It is not surprising that the IX1, I4 and i5 have made the heavy lifting. BMW has also benefited from Tesla’s latest fights when the American car manufacturer recorded a dramatic drop in sales by 62.2%. Tesla sold only 4,935 cars in Germany in the first quarter of 2025, while BMW more than twice delivered this number with 10,315 EVS.
What about gasoline models? They still make most of the BMW sales sales, but their share shrinks: from 42.58% in the first quarter of 2023 to 37.42% this year. Plug-in hybrids, on the other hand, increase and rise from 8.56% to 13.5%.
We imagine that BMW will bring its EV sales into higher equipment with the arrival of the new class. We will not see any influence in this year’s programs, since the deliveries of the new IX3 do not begin worldwide until later in 2026. Then we will also see the i3 sedan. Both, especially the crossover, should significantly increase the proportion of electric vehicles next year.
