BMW fights fake parts with the first digitally checkable hologram strip

Fake spare parts are a global problem. BMW will take on a new security function: the first digitally checkable hologram strip, which was developed with short -scribos. Fake spare parts compromise the performance, increase the maintenance costs and can suspend the drivers of real risk. To tackle the problem, the BMW Group worked with Scribos short to develop the first digitally checkable hologram strip for spare parts packaging.

How the new safety strip works

The strip looks like a standard hologram, but has more advanced safety functions. It uses dynamic optical effects, microtext and hidden markers that are invisible to the mere eye. These elements can only be authenticated with a dedicated short -Sribos app that is available to trained experts.

This two-stage system-The physical holography in combination with digital review power is almost impossible for counterfeits to replicate. Even if the packaging is copied, the hologram cannot be confirmed as real without the right tools.

BMW manages a massive spare parts network with more than 40 million parts worldwide. The new hologram strip adds critical protection for dealers, service centers and customers. There is a reliable way to check parts quickly and cut off one of the main entry points for fake products.

Why is it important

Other manufacturers have highlighted how widespread the problem is. Mercedes-Benz reported in 2024, more than 1.5 million fake parts, including brake components with toxic materials and combustible air filters. While BMW does not have any specific numbers, it is pending with the same risks: cheap failures that occasionally look like, but are made without regard to security.

Build trust in real parts

The hologram strip is intended to restore confidence in the supply chain. Customers may not notice the difference themselves, but they can be sure that your dealer or workshop has the means to check every part. For BMW, the movement is less about image than to keep uncertain products out of circulation.
