BMW is launching a voluntary safety recall for certain 2025-2026 BMW The recall affects a total of 36,922 vehicles, including the X3 30 xDrive and the X3 M50 xDrive, built between August 14, 2024 and October 20, 2025.
What’s the problem?

According to BMW, the problem is related to the steering system software, which “may not be robust enough.” The problem affects the steering torque sensor, which has two channels. If one of these channels fails while the vehicle is stationary – whether starting or in drive mode but not moving – the software diagnostics may not correctly detect the condition. According to BMW, in these rare situations, unintentional steering wheel movements can occur.
Although incidents have reportedly only occurred when the vehicle is stationary, BMW cautions that unexpected steering movements could still increase the risk of an accident and/or injury, particularly because they can frighten the driver or occur at an unpredictable time. BMW says there are no known accidents or injuries related to the problem.
How was the problem discovered?
According to BMW’s internal timeline, the first notable incident occurred on August 22, 2025, when unexpected steering wheel movements were observed during vehicle startup at an assembly plant. A technical review was initiated on September 1st. As the investigation continued, BMW initiated a more comprehensive review of the field data. In September, one field case was recorded during commissioning. In another case on October 2, an unexpected steering movement occurred while the vehicle was in drive mode but still stationary. BMW had the steering rack removed and sent to the supplier for analysis.
BMW then checked suppliers’ production records in early October to determine the scope. In addition, additional field cases that occurred in October and November were included in the analysis. Further results were available at the end of November. On December 4, 2025, BMW decided – “with great caution” – to carry out a voluntary safety recall.
BMW said it became aware of around 21 cases between August 22 and December 4 that could be related to the problem and these were taken into account during the technical review.
What owners should expect
BMW’s schedule includes:
- Dealer notification begins and ends December 11, 2025
- Owner notification begins and ends February 2, 2026
The recall documentation indicates a software-related fix, meaning affected vehicles should ultimately receive an updated steering system software calibration. If you own a 2025 or 2026 X3, particularly an
