BMW’s “Robuster” SUV (G74) aims at off-road luxury in 2029

Earlier today, Automobile messages confirmed what we have indicated since 2024: BMW developed a brand new SUV, internally with the code name G74, and bears the working title “Rugged”. Our BMW sources say that the Rugged marks the brand’s entry into a brand new segment. It is far from being a dressed G65 X5, but a basic model with a pronounced mission and technical approach.

From competitor tests to reality: how the robust was designed

The Rugged is built in the Spartanburg by BMW, South Carolina, but that was not always the plan. As early as 2022 and 2023, the managers and engineers from BMW tacitly rated competitor products, including the Rivian R1T, which has earned high praise in the company. These tests planted the seeds for a more adventurous, off-road-capable BMW-one to compete directly with SUVs and trucks with premium lifestyle.

The original concept for the BMW Rugged was a completely different machine. It was designed as a purely electrical model that was built on the Na5 IX3 platform. Therefore, it had to be built either in Debrecen, Hungary or San Luis Potosi, Mexico. According to insiders, a full design model was supposedly created, although it is unclear whether it has completed a functional prototype. When the market conditions were postponed and the EV demand cooled down, the BMW leadership decided to rethink the approach. The project based in Na5 was put up in favor of a new plan: Keep the robust name, but move the vehicle into the Clar architecture under the G74 code name. This change opened the door to several drive lines, including plug-in hybrid and fully electric versions.

The platform switch also means that the Rugged is replaced by the drivetrain technology with the upcoming G65 X5. This indicates the top electrical version that provides a performance that is similar to the rumored 610 hp of the IX5 M70, while the plug-in hybrid can offer between 500 and 550 hp. The EV variant will use the gene6 battery and the motor technology of the BMW-Gen6-BMW, which target at least 700 kilometers of range in the WLTP cycle, although the final numbers still have to be confirmed.

Interior to present new class design language

The size and ability will be of central importance for the calling of the robus. According to sources, it will be a large SUV with three row seats, a wide-open panoramic roof and even tailgate seats for outdoor enthusiasts that are viewed by the competitors in the segment. Inside, design and technology will follow the upcoming new class approach from BMW, which can be seen for the first time next year in the G65 X5.

Start planned for 2029 with several drive lines

According to our reporting and our automotive messages, the BMW Rugged is to be planned in 2029. This timeline offers BMW enough ways to refine the product, to adapt to the shift in the market conditions and to include the latest hybrid and EV progress in the most official official mainstream model so far. The G74 Rugged is far from a harder X5 and represents the first serious attempt by BMW to penetrate into the adventure -SUV room -a step that could at least redefine the brand’s image in one of the most interesting premium segments.
