BMW has just met a large milestone: it is now being actively tested Assb cells (All-Solid-State Battery) in A BMW i7 Prototype. What exactly is a solid battery?
In short: the flammable liquid electrolytes in conventional lithium-ion batteries and replaces it with a firm. This change brings with it some great advantages:
- More energy densityWhich could mean more range without larger batteries.
- Better securityBecause solid electrolytes are far less susceptible to thermal outliers.
- Faster chargingThanks to improved ion conductivity.
What this means for BMW – and why Mini fans should take care of it
While BMW begins with high-end applications such as the i7, the real promise comes when this technology meets the installation. The following could deliver:
- Extended areaParticularly important for Minis EVS of the next generation such as the J01 Cooper and Aceman.
- Lower weightWhich could help to bring back part of the mobility that have dulled heavier electric vehicles.
- Smaller packagingFreedom of space and unlocking design flexibility – Keulen for the compact proportions of Mini.
This technology could be transformative for Mini. Think about it: a real small electrical mini with a real area, lighter curb weight and packaging that does not affect interior or the design character. This is the dream and solid state could help us bring us there.
Don’t expect it tomorrow
This is still early phase tests. The widespread introduction of solid-state technologies has probably been removed for years, and scaling will require larger investments. But the commitment of BMW – both financially and strategically – is real. And if it pays off, there could be Mini something that no other Premium small EV offers gave: A really uncompromising electrical driving experience.
