With the publication of its annual report this week, the BMW group gave further details on how it was achieved in 2024. The proportion of electric vehicles in total delivery rose from 14.7% to 17.4%. However, it is still a long way to reach 50% by the end of the decade. The automotive conglomerate is on the new class family from EVS. First of all, at least six models will be offered for sale by 2028.
In the meantime, the BMW core brand already makes much better than its competitors in terms of the EV share of total deliveries. Only 9.33% of the Mercedes vehicles delivered in 2024 had no combustion engine. Audi was in the same stadium, with EVS 9.65% of the total volume. As already reported, BMW EVS sold those of Mercedes and Audi together.
The leading BMW brand sent 368,475 electric cars in 2024, a jump of 11.6% over the previous year. In the meantime, Mercedes 185,059 EVS and Audi only sold 164,000 in 2024. We can add 56,171 EVS to the figures from BMW, which were sold by Mini and another 1,890 by Rolls-Royce. The BMW group sent 426,536 purely electric vehicles or 13.5% more than in the previous year.
While the demand for pure electric vehicles increased, the deliveries of plug-in hybrids at BMW and 85% for mini decreased by 5.6%. A total of 166,614 phevs were delivered by the two brands. Rolls-Royce does not sell vehicles that combine a combustion engine with an electric motor.
BMW has reasons to assume that the next few years will increase the proportion of electric vehicles in total sales. The IX3, which is due this year and the i3 in 2026, replace existing models in high -volumes segments, but there will be further additions to the list. The new class will probably include an i3 tour and an IX4. Later in this decade there could also be an I1 or I2 that acts as an entry-level EV. Regardless of this, BMW still uses Clar for a trio from EVS. The next generation X5, X6 and X7 will also produce zero emission derivatives.
Despite a predicted increase in the sale of electric cars, BMW does not intend to give up the combustion engines soon. While Mini and Rolls-Royce will be fully electrical until the early 2030s, Munich ice cream will last until the next decade and possibly beyond.
