Camouflaged prototypes of BMW’s upcoming iX4 have been caught testing in Germany again, highlighting the company’s move away from the X4’s combustion-powered heritage. BMW has completely dispensed with combustion engines in the X4 and the iX4 will be the brand’s first electric Sports Activity Coupé on the completely new Neue Klasse platform. The iX4, internally called “NA7,” represents a new milestone in the company’s long history: its first all-electric crossover coupe.
A coupe look, as expected

Even wrapped in heavy camouflage, the test vehicle cannot hide its coupe-like shape. In fact, compared to the previous X4 “G02,” the prototype’s profile is noticeably more aggressive and bold, with beefy fenders giving the entire vehicle a lower, flatter stance. Viewed from the front, the iX4 shares the same DNA as its smaller sibling, the iX3 “NA5,” but the real transformation occurs from the B-pillars toward the rear.
The roofline becomes significantly narrower, shrinking the greenhouse to emphasize the coupé silhouette. There’s still a quarter window – a styling element BMW adopted from the iX3 – but it’s noticeably smaller than the standard model. If you expect the iX4 to retain the spacious interior feel of a conventional SUV, be prepared for compromises. Rear headroom and cargo space will inevitably suffer, but that’s the trade-off that coupe-like proportions bring.
A particularly fascinating design element emerged from these spy images: a horizontal cutout in the tailgate spoiler, which probably houses the third brake light. Typically, BMW positions this light at the top of the rear window, but the iX4’s designers appear to be experimenting with a new placement strategy. The wheels visible on the prototype feature a fresh two-tone design and flush door handles – a carryover from the iX3.
Inside: Similar to the BMW iX3
The interior will largely reflect the architecture of the iX3, marking a significant departure from what X4 owners might expect. The familiar iDrive knob and most physical buttons have been removed in favor of a more minimalist approach. The command center is a 17.9-inch touchscreen positioned front and center.
Combined with the latest iDrive, expect the rest of the design and materials to be modeled on those of the iX3.
Timeline and production

BMW is expected to officially unveil the iX4 in summer 2026, giving the company time to perfect the final details. Production is rumored to begin in November 2026 at BMW’s brand new Debrecen factory in Hungary.
