For many first-time buyers, public fees such as a fragmented, applesive experience can appear in particular compared to simplicity to recharge your battery. However, BMW offers a new plug & LAD function in the USA that offers an experience that is as close to “plugs and paths” as possible.
Plug & Charge was originally launched in Europe and is now available for several BMW electric vehicles in the USA, thanks to a partnership with Electrify America and Shell Recoarge. Here is everything you need to know.
What is Plug & Lad?

Plug & LAD is a system with which your BMW electro vehicle automatically authenticated and charged with the compatible DC -Fr at charging devices -no app, no credit card or RFID key. It works with the ISO 15118 communication standard, which safely transfers the digital login information of your vehicle to the charging station. As long as you are inscribed in a valid charging plan, just put the cable on and the session starts automatically.
Where can you use it?

In the United States, BMW Plug & LAD is currently working exclusively with Electrify America and Shell Charge -the country’s largest open DC Fast load network. At supported stations, BMW -V owners can easily connect and be charged without touching their telephone or screen of the charger.
Other loading networks (such as EVGO, Chargepoint or Blink) are accessible via the Shell Recoarge partnership of BMW, but do not yet support ISO 15118 -Plug & LAD functionality.
Which BMW models support plug & lad?

From mid -2025 the following US BMW EVS Support Plug & Lad via Electrify America:
- BMW IX – Building on from July 2023
- BMW i4 – 2024 model year and later
- BMW i5 – 2024–2026
- BMW i7 – 2023–2025
Some earlier builds may require software update that is carried out by a BMW dealer to activate Plug & LAD functions. See the full table below:
| Year | Model | Available | Available when activating dealers | Unavailable |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 | All BMW electric vehicles | Yes | ||
| 2024 | i5 | Yes | ||

How to set it
Here you can find out how to start with Plug & Lad on a compatible BMW:
1. Create or link a BMW -ID in the My BMW app.
2. Activate your free Electrify America plan (available with most new BMW EVS).
3. In the Electrify America app, go to your plan details and activate Plug & LAD.
4. Your car will keep the certificate safely and you are ready.
As soon as the facility is complete, no apps or cards on the charger have to be used again. The system treats everything above the cable.
Is the charging still free?
Most new BMW EVs have two years free DC -Fast load through Electrify America or 1,000 kWh, depending on the model and the date of purchase. Plug & LAD works in connection with this offer – justified users can benefit from both convenience and free shops.
What’s next?

While Plug & LAD is currently limited to Electrify America and Shell Lade in the USA, the underlying ISO 15118 standard supports the support of multi-account support. Depending on the charger, the ratio of a car can theoretically select between several providers.
BMW has already made this possible in Europe with ionity and aral pulse, and future US support could extend to other networks if they take the standard. At the moment, Electrify America and Shell Lade are the only option for plug & LAD compatible for BMW drivers in the states.
