Hyundais n Sport could assume the BMW’s M performance models

Hyundai has traveled a long way from the early days as a budget -friendly automobile manufacturer. In the past ten years, the Korean brand has taken serious performance steps, whereby models such as the Elantra N and Ioniq 5 N can prove that it can head to head with premium auto manufacturers. Hyundais pressure in the performance is not happening by chance. A big turning point came in 2015 when the company Albert Biermann, an experienced engineer of the BMW M division, hired, who had spent more than three decades to develop the M -cars from BMW. Now it looks as if Hyundai is preparing to take a further step forward with a sport, a newly branded name that indicates a performance list that is confronted with the M -performance models from BMW.

On February 27, 2025, Hyundai submitted an American brand application for “N Sport”, which covered a number of products related to vehicle. While car manufacturers have often used brand names without them, this registration stood out because it contained an emblem. The design is similar to Hyundais of existing N line badges, but with “sport”, which are written in a gray background, it indicates that this is more than just a place owner name.

If Hyundai follows the BMW M power formula, the N sports installation would close between basic models and full-fledged N cars. Hyundai could also apply this formula to its growing electrical line -up and create an Ioniq 6 N sports with mild electricity and chassis upgrades – like BMW with the i4 M50. Speaking of the latter, the i4 M50 is also the best -selling car in 2024 BMW MS.

The BMW Blueprint: What Hyundai follows

Hyundai doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel here. BMW has spent years to perfect the three -stage performance hierarchy that Hyundai is now accepting. On the basis, BMW M offers sports packages that give a more aggressive styling but do not touch the engine. Afterwards there are M performance models that have real mechanical upgrades -Stronger engines, sportier suspension setups and more dynamic handling -and remain comfortable enough for everyday use. BMW has its full M cars above, which are designed for serious performance and route functions. Some of the most popular M performance models are M340i, M340D (in Europe), M240i, X3 M40 and the I4 M50 mentioned above.

The biggest question for Hyundai is whether a sport will be more than just a badge. Some car manufacturers, such as Mercedes-Benz, have used their performance branding with medium level, as the AMG 43-models-real mechanical upgrades, while others, like Audi, mainly adhered to visual improvements.

Biermann’s influence

In Hyundai, Biermann was commissioned to create a real performance department from scratch. The N brand was born under his leadership and the results speak for themselves. The i30 N and Elantra N have won skeptics and prove that Hyundai could produce cars with sharp handling, appealing driving dynamics and athletics performance. The Kia Stinger, another product of Biermann’s term of office, became a surprising Sport sedan competitor for German offers.

Biermann finally became Hyundais F&E leader and not only formed the N division, but also the approach of the entire company for driving dynamics. Although he retired from his executive role in 2021, he continues to work as a consultant for Hyundai and ensures that his performance -oriented philosophy remains part of the brand’s DNA. Hyundai has currently not confirmed any official plans for N Sport, and a brand registration is guaranteed not to produce. [Source: CarMoses]
