McLaren F1 GTR returns as Gordon Murrays S1 LM

The McLaren F1 was one of the most important cars of the 20TH Century. And thanks to a V12 engine supported by BMW, it is probably more than a dream super sports car of a BMW enthusiast. Gordon Murray, the designer behind the McLaren F1, has not rested on his laurels since the mid -nineties. After almost 20 years with McLaren, he founded his own shop. Half a decade ago, he fascinated the world with the GMA T.50. Now the T.50 is increased even further. Gordon Murray Automotive (GMA) essentially introduces a modernized McLaren F1 GTR, which is referred to as GMA S1 LM. And although his BMW power plant could be Mia, the descent could not be clearer.

GMA goes with the S1 LM F1

As already mentioned, the GMA S1 LM is based on the T.50. But GMA took steps to better align the outer design of the car with the McLaren F1 GTR from the past. The aluminum and carbon fiber pan of the car is located in the new carbon fiber body, which shows a number of layers, divots and recordings – probably in the name of aerodynamics, but also a clear homage to the F1. Five spoke wheels are clear homage to the F1-GTR bikes. While the S1 LM loses the rear fan that decorates the back of the T.50, it receives a quad exhaust, the lamp in the F1 style and the F1-inspired badge. It also wins a unique aero kit that includes a front splinter, a rear diffuser and a multiple cavity wing. A lower roof line and a lower driving height differentiate the car further from the T.50 on which it is based.

As in T.50, the engine of the S1 LM is located at the back. While the BMW Sourced S70 is off, GMA has a modern V12 engine that is more than able to occur. The 4.3-liter V12 produces around 690 hp (700 hp) and can be able to be an out-side 12,100 rpm. Like the McLaren F1, the S1 LM has gold film harnesses in the engine compartment. The V12 gets into a manual gear that shares its housing and internal with the T50. The S1 LM does not share suspension with the T50; GMA claims that it is “tailored”.

Room for three

Inside, the S1 LM even replicates the strange seating arrangement of the BMW provider of BMW F1. That shouldn’t be a surprise – this is also a remnant from the T.50. The central drive position, the layout for clean measuring devices and premium materials are a common thread in all of Gordon Murray. There is no reason to expect something else here in the S1 LM.

The three-seater layout means that only fifteen people on earth can ever sit in an S1 LM at the same time. GMA only produces “customers” five examples of the car. The wording certainly shows that only one (very good) customer take all five home with them, but we speculate. Despite the channeling of the F1 GTR – the racing version of the F1 – the S1 LM is completely legal. No price about price, but deliveries begin in 2026. These are the type of cars that we like to see. We appreciate GMA that does the best of the best as well as it can be thirty years later. Even if we never sit, let alone drive one.
