It is understandable why you have some concerns about the security of a car produced in China. After all, vehicles that are gathered in the People’s Republic do not have an excellent track record in terms of processing quality. But it is 2025 and things have improved a lot. It is even more important that the new Mini Cooper Electric remains over and through a BMW group product so that it does not play security. The European New Car Assessment Program recently tested the “J01” and gave a maximum five-star rating.
The Dinky Electric Hatch from Spotlight Automotive (A BMW Group-Great Wall Motor-Joint Venture) impressed the euro NCAP. It achieved a protective value of 89% for adults, 85% for children, 77% for pedestrians and 79% for tech for active security on board. The five-star rating applies to all three flavors of the model: E, SE and the hot JCW. Both the versions of the left and the right hand qualify for the maximum security assessment.

A lesser-known standard feature in the “J01” is the pelvic girdle preliminary consultant. Mini also developed the three-door electrical cooper model with an airbag between the front seats. This airbag prevents the driver and passenger from colliding in an accident. Logic tells us that the Aceman (“J05”) will earn a similar score. The “J05” is effectively a five-door crossover version. It will also be manufactured in China at the new factory of Spotlight Automotive in Zhangjiagen.
Mini had intended to build the Luke and Crossover -Elektro duo from 2026 in Oxford. However, British production was postponed indefinitely. The Cooper “J01” and Aceman “J05” are currently produced exclusively in China.
As you may remember, Euro NCAP gave another mini a full five-star rating not too long ago. The compatriot carried out the crash test last December. The compact crossover is produced in Germany in the Leipzig plant together with several compact BMWs with front-wheel drive.
