Only 4 stars in the Euro NCAP crash test

When Euro NCAP gave the 1 Series a four-star rating a few months ago, it was a hard pill to swallow for BMW fanatics. There’s more bad news on this front, as the 2 Series Gran Coupe also failed to achieve the top rating of five stars. Of course we saw this coming from a mile away. The “F74” is essentially a sedan version of the “F70” hatchback, so it was bound to receive the same score.

According to Euro NCAP, the 2 Series Gran Coupe was held back by its 78% adult occupant protection score, which predictably matched the 1 Series’ result earlier this year. The four-door sedan also received identical ratings of 85% for vulnerable road users and 80% for safety assist. It achieved a slightly higher score for children, 86% instead of 84%.

Nevertheless, there is no denying that the result of the 2 Series Gran Coupe is disappointing. 23 cars took part in the biggest Euro NCAP crash test of the year, with only four others receiving a four-star rating. None came from a luxury brand: Toyota Yaris Cross, Nissan Qashqai, Volkswagen Multivan and Volkswagen Caddy.

Once the laughingstock of the automotive industry, Chinese brands impressed in this round with several five-star performers: Leapmotor B10, Hongqi EHS7, BYD SEAL 6 and the MG MGS9 PHEV. While the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe disappointed, three cars performed exceptionally well: the Leapmotor B10, the Mercedes CLE Coupe and the Hongqi EHS7 all achieved 93% in adult occupant protection. The Volvo EX90 and BYD SEAL 6 weren’t far behind at an impressive 92%.

Only the VW commercial vehicles Multivan and Caddy performed worse in terms of occupant protection for adults, at 77% and 72% respectively. The 1 Series and 2 Series Gran Coupe are not the only BMWs that have missed out on the fifth star in recent years. Euro NCAP also rated the i4 and 2 Series Coupé with four stars in 2022. If you look further back, the oddball i3 also missed five stars in 2013.
