The year is 2025, but BMW is partying like it’s 1990, celebrating South Africa’s legendary 325iS. Despite the name, this E30 homage is not based on the 3 Series, but rather the smaller 2 Series. On the other hand, today’s 2 Series is still significantly larger than the second-generation 3 Series, as car bloat hasn’t slowed down over the years. But that’s a story for another time. The modern homage to the car affectionately known as “Gusheshe” begins as the M240i xDrive. Then come the retro-inspired accents.
The double rear spoiler of the original is given a modern interpretation by M Performance Parts for the trunk lid and the upper rear window. Black door handles also pay homage to the 325iS, while the M Performance wheels are said to feature a heritage-inspired design. We’re not entirely convinced by the similarity, but the alloys certainly make this M240i special.
BMW South Africa further upgrades the all-wheel drive coupe with the M Sport Pro package and a carbon front splitter. Buyers can opt for the Fire Red paint finish shown here, or opt for Skyscraper Grey, Sapphire Black or Mineral White. Inside, the nostalgic theme continues with an armrest in an over-check tartan pattern. It’s a subtle nod to the original 325iS’ anthracite fabric upholstery. A memorial plaque completes the renovation.

Unlike its predecessor, which received mechanical improvements, this tribute does not go beyond visual changes. The 325iS Homage Edition retains the turbocharged inline-six engine with 382 hp and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm). The B58 transmits power to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. The hardware is good for a 0-100 km/h sprint in 4.3 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h).
The M division is only building 33 examples, which will be sold exclusively via an online auction from Tuesday, October 21st. BMW South Africa has set the reserve price at R1,435,000 (approximately US$84,000 at current exchange rates) and will donate the proceeds to the charities it supports.
