The new BMW X7 has an optional two-tone paint finish

BMW is currently putting the finishing touches on the new X5 before the G65 launches later this year. If you need a third row, you’ll have to wait until next year for the X7 G67. Munich wants to further increase the heights of the upper class luxury SUV in several respects.

We previously reported that the flagship Luxobarge would get soft-close doors as standard and optional automatic doors, similar to those found on the 7 Series. In addition, ventilated and massaging rear seats as well as a new entertainment system for relaxed passengers in the rear are planned.

A new report from a BMW insider suggests that the X7 will adopt yet another feature from the top sedan. Bimmer post Forum member “ynguldyn” claims that two-tone paint schemes are planned for the crown jewel of the SUV range. Our own sources have confirmed that buyers of the G67 will have the option to mix and match colors for the upper and lower body areas.

Although BMW has already released an X7 painted in Space Silver over Velvet Blue, the luxury family transporter didn’t look like this when it left the factory. After assembly in Spartanburg, the opulent SUV was shipped to Japan, where the company’s local branch repainted the vehicle. There, customers could also order the model with the upper body paint in Oxide Gray or Black Sapphire. In Rolls-Royce style, a subtle body line separates the two colors.

BMW wants to offer the bi-color look worldwide for the X7 G67. This likely means the vehicles receive the high-quality exterior treatment right at the paint shop in South Carolina. The company already has years of experience with this process, having mixed the colors for the 7 Series G70 in Dingolfing.

The previous generation sedan (G12) also received the two-tone treatment, but only in China for a failed M760Li xDrive. By far the most famous BMW of this type is the late Karl Lagerfeld’s stunning L7 (E38), painted maroon metallic over gold orange metallic.

Since BMW ALPINA now stands above the core BMW brand, it would make sense for the 7 Series and X7 to adopt color combinations with the ALPINA emblem. The G72 sedan and the two-row G69 SUV will close the gap with the Rolls-Royce Ghost and Cullinan, respectively. This would allow BMW ALPINA to compete directly with the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class and GLS.
