This is the only BMW M3 GTR racing car that is still running: video

Whether on the track or on the street, the M3 GTR is a real unicorn. Today it is a car that is built in the hearts of collectors to race the collectors and is even more scarce. Thomas Plucinsky, head of the BMW Group Classic USA, says that in 2025 only three of the only track machines are left. The street version is just as rare. At the start, the Road Legal version, which was a special homologation, kept the title of the most expensive new BMW of all time. Price sign? Cool 250,000 €.

For the 50th anniversary of 3 series, the Petersen Automotive Museum pulled a dream assembly with seven cars that represent each generation. Among them, the GTR was the only E46 that packed a V8. Enthusiasts know it through its code name P60B40 and its indycar origin. In 2001 the racing car dominated the Almosen series and took first and third place in seven out of ten races. This car is the last M3 -GTR that is still a quarter of a century after the building.

But the fairy tale ended after the 2001 season. The GTR forced rules of rule from the competition. However, BMW adapted it in 2003 for Grand-AM with a smaller straight line. The 2004 championship, retired in 2006, won immediately and was imposed in 2015 in the Full 2001-Spec Glory with its 4.0-liter V8 and the legendary painting of Petite Le Mans with 4.0-liter, 10,000 rpm.

US-Spec vehicles were delivered with a Naca channel to cool the cockpit, far from today’s air-conditioned M4 racing cars. While the GTR unmistakably wore E46 in the form of a carbon fiber and was rolled on BBS wheels that were only built for it, and the last six -edited nut was ever used on a BMW motor sports machine.

After the racing days were over, BMW cut off the car and almost landed in a partial container. But the BMW Group Classic USA refused to let a legend die. They followed the scattered components in a warehouse in Indianapolis and brought back the original crew from 2001 to restore them. Eighteen tedious months later the M3 GTR was reborn and ready to scream again.
