Warhol’s BMW M1 Art Car becomes the first BMW in the National Historic Vehicle Register

The Warhol One is at the top of the list of legendary BMW Kunstautos. After all, the combination of a survival-sized creator-friendly Andy Warhol of the Velvet Undergrounds at the height of his career and one of the most exclusive and top-class BMWs that have ever been released at this time is the perfect recipe for something like that. Then adjust that the famous BMW M1 is added to the national historical vehicle register. The car is exhibited between September 17 and September 23, 2025 in Glass in the National Mall. It will be the 37TH Automobile added and is the first BMW included in the register.

Warhol paints the BMW M1 Art Car, the fourth vehicle in the Kuntauto program, in just 28 minutes. He turned the polymer base directly to the car of the car and claimed that he had “tried to show speed as a visual picture”. This is a departure from his predecessors, who instead first painted into scale models. The car later drove in Le Mans, where it was piloted by Manfred Winkelhock, HervĂ© Poulain and Marcel Mignot. It was second in class and sixth in total. Remarkably, like his predecessors, Warhol received no payment for his work for the fourth art store. He used a total of 13 pounds (six kilograms) color to cover the Car-as-a-canvas.

The national historical vehicle register is a cooperative effort between the insurance service provider (and the Interior Ministry of the US interior) Hagerty and the Interior Ministry of the US interior to celebrate historically important vehicles. “The vehicles listed here show that the enormous impact cars had all aspects of American history,” says Hagerty Drivers Foundation on the register of the register.

The register has recorded a wide range of vehicles. You can find obvious picks such as the Shelby Daytona Cobra from 1964 as well as deeper cuts such as the 1940 GM Futurliner. Somewhere in between are the usual suspects like the Mercedes Gullwing and Willy CJ-6. CEO of the Hagerty Drivers Foundation McKel Hagerty weighs the M1 Art Car. “Many consider the automotive as an art form in motion, and the Warhol BMW M1 is probably the most iconic example in the Art Car series.”

As we have already reported, the Warhol M1 Art Car will connect Julie Mehretu Art Car to lead the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance 2025. Then it goes to Washington DC for his week in the spotlight. The M1 Art Car is an addition to the National Historic Vehicle Register. We cannot imagine a deserved BMW. Especially when you consider that it marks a premiere for the brand.
