2027 BMW X5 prototype test on the highway with a new class-inspired design

The best -selling SUV from BMW is preparing for its most transformative generation so far. Almost a year before the planned debut on the German motorway, catch the German motorway, the X5 of the next generation-internal G65 is known after a sensation. And for good reason. The fifth generation BMW X5 will not only accept the design styling of new-class cars, but also its electrified technology.

An evolutionary design compared to the current generation

Even due to the camouflage, some things become clear. The overall shape remains unmistakable X5, but the details are where things become interesting. Above all, the prototype seems to be missing conventional door handles. But take a closer look and you will discover discreet winglets that are hidden along the belt line of all four doors. These small aerodynamic tabs come directly from last year’s vision NEE class X concept. Although the upcoming BMW IX3 seems to have pull -in door handles, the X5 will probably take a different direction.

Things change dramatically in the cabin. Although we have not yet seen a complete interior of spy, the sources indicate that BMW is hard for the new class philosophy here. The traditional instrument cluster will disappear completely and replaced by a comprehensive digital projection system called panoramic view vision. Instead of an independent screen behind the bike, the drivers get three solid tiles directly on the base of the windshield, with six adaptable tiles stretch to the right. The aim is to escape the cabin and at the same time keep essential information in your line of view.

In the center of everything, a massive touchscreen of 17.9 inches will be responsible for everything from navigation to the climate. And yes, BMW finally says goodbye to the Idrive Rotary Controller, a staple of the brand for more than two decades. Instead, the next generation system is completely relating to touch and language inputs, with an optional 3D head-up display available for those who want even more futuristic flair.

Ice, hybrid, EV and hydrogen

While the technology is innovative, the strategy for drive train is one of inclusiveness. With the new X5, BMW will not pursue a uniform approach with an all-size approach. Petrol and diesel engines are still offered, including the latest iteration of the 4.4-liter V8 turbo V8 for selected markets. Plug-in hybrid versions are listed by a high-performance M60E-XDRIVE variant, which combines an electrified inline-SIX with quad exhaust tips and serious performance intentions. And for the first time, the X5 with the new IX5 becomes fully electrically. Although it runs on the same Clar platform as its combustion siblings, the IX5 new class Battery and Motor Technologies (Gen6) will be included in particular the cylindrical battery disorders of the next generation of BMW and improved EDRIVE components.

At the moment it looks like the Electric X5 is taking the M-Lite performance room, similar to the IX M70 instead of becoming a full-grown M-car. This could change around the management, but BMW clearly pursues a measured approach to electrify its core models. In the meantime, Diesel will continue to play a role in Europe and offer a high option for long-distance drive for long-distance drivers who are not entirely willing to make the leap to plug-in hybrids.

BMW X5 Langrad for China

China will also receive a dedicated version of the new X5. A long -wheel model known as G78 is already in the pipeline. Production begins in early 2027 and runs all the way by the end of 2035. BMW knows that markets like China have unique requirements and that the X5 footprint for chauffeured passengers are divided into this segment.

With regard to the production time bar, BMW would like to start building the X5 of the fifth generation in August 2026. The first M60 variant with V8 providers is expected in March 2027. A complete unveiling should take place at some point in the middle of 2026, but do not expect that all variants will start at the same time. BMW will probably stumble the rollout over several months and gradually introduce additional equipment variant and drive trains to keep the installation structure fresh and to expand its life cycle.
