50 years of the BMW 3 series: E36 (third generation)

Since BMW is the 50th anniversary of the 3 Series, BMWblog examines the history of the model and the contribution of the car manufacturer to the success of the car manufacturer. We have already analyzed the first and second generations – that is, E21 and E30. The former enabled BMW to combat the security, environmental and fuel crises of the auto industry of the 1970s and 1980s, while the latter determined the unique identity of the 3 Series by significantly expanding its base. Both were commercial success.

Nevertheless, today we will talk about the third generation 3, which is known as the E36. It was built between 1990 and 2000 with a total output of 2.7 million units. 1.3 million E21 and 2.34 million E30 were produced as a reference. Not to mention that the platform of the E30 platform for the limited Z1 of the E36 underpinned the Z3 sports car, which could be seen in mass production and in which James Bond: Goldeneye Film.

Commercial success in connection with critical recognition

The E36 -3 series was not only a commercial success, but was also celebrated by the criticism. It received enthusiastic reviews of publications such as AutocarPresent Street & track And Performance CarAnd it was recorded Car and driver 10 Best list Every year it was for sale. The design of the vehicle was of course the first to notice. The E36 was more aerodynamic and contemporary than its predecessors, which led to better efficiency, performance and visual attraction. It was also the first 3 Series that was available as a bar.

Apart from that, the E36 contained improved drive strand options. The entry level 316i produced only by 100 hp, but the 325i and the 328i produced 190 hp. In comparison, the E30 325i produced 168 hp and 164 pound foot torque, while the E21 323i produced 143 hp and £ 140 pound and accelerated from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 9 seconds.

In addition, the area finally dissolved with the M3, which was offered as a sedan for the first time. It was driven by the S50 and S52-inline-Six engines, with the European variant produced 321 hp and 258 pound foot torque, and the American Spec model, which generates 240 hp and 236 pound foot torque. With a time of 0 to 60 miles per hour of about 5.5 seconds, the E36 M3 was considerably faster than the four -cylinder E30 M3 (6.5 seconds).

Remarkably, the Z3 M had similar performance figures and provided 315 hp and 251 pound foot torque.

Legacy – overshadowed by the E30 and the E46?

However, keep in mind that the E36 M3 was not specially developed as a homologation specialties, so it did not have the same charm or stature as the E30 M3. This does not reduce the fact that it was an excellent sports car – if at all mere driving pleasure.

The only problem is that the E36, like the E21, was put in the shade by its predecessor (E30) and its successor (E46). In fact, the E30 has a significant inheritance because it expanded the 3-series area with the more practical limousine style and the first generation M3. In the meantime, the E46 obviously exceeded the E36 with more advanced technology, engineering and performance.

Admittedly, the E36 also grew the 3 Series portfolio (e.g. M3 sedan or the 3 Series compact) and contained considerable mechanical improvements, but that was not sufficient to obtain the same level of recognition as the E30 or the E46. However, we still believe that the third generation 3 Series is a good choice for those who have a classic BMW and want to experience the history and legacy of the brand.
