BMW 8er and Z4 end softly

The upcoming end of the BMW 8 series and the BMW Z4 is not a news because we have already dealt with the topic. However, the time of their simultaneous departures underlines a significant change for BMW. According to BMW via Auto motor and sportsthe two models will leave Germany around the turn of the year and thus mark what many call the end of an era – a moment when two emotional, enthusiast -oriented name tags leave the stage without confirmed replacement. At least not officially.

The 8er: The silent farewell to a Grand Tourer

The second generation of the 8 series introduced in 2018 approaches the end of its normal life cycle. Production in Germany was discontinued at the end of September 2025, although there are still a few units in the dealer inventory. Last year, BMW subtly signaled the farewell to the series of 8 by a number of special editions, including the final edition available exclusively in Japan, various M Heritage models and finally the limited concepts skytop and speedtop, which stylishly celebrated the line line.

As for a successor, BMW remains silent. Insiders have not given a confirmation nor rejection regarding a third generation model. In view of the high development costs and the limited worldwide demand for large two -door luxury cars, however, a future 8 -seater coupé or convertible appears increasingly unlikely. In contrast, a possible revival of the 8 Series Gran Coupé within the product range from BMW could still make sense and positioned as a more sportier, more emotional alternative to the flagship of the 7 series.

There is an additional option: Since the 8 and M8 models are based on the flexible Clar architecture, the brand could offer a bridging model with a slight redesign model until a completely new generation is brought to life. But that is just an assumption on our part without confirmation on the part of the brand.

The Z4: One last hurray for the roadster

The BMW Z4 (G29) has been on loan for some time. The last act took place with the introduction of the six-speed manual transmission Z4 M40i, which is widely considered a farewell gift for purists. The production of the roadster will continue until spring 2026, after which it will be tacitly removed from the range. So far there are no concrete signs of a successor.

While some fans imagine what a Z4 inspired by the new class could look like, the reality that the global demand for compact two -seater roadsters has decreased sharply. Nevertheless, the story of BMW with Z models-from Z1 to Z8-proves that there can be comebacks, sometimes years after the disappearance of a model series. And hopefully it’s still a combustion engine.

When the brand looks into the future, it is clear that the resources are directed towards electrification and models based on the new class. Nevertheless, for many enthusiasts, the simultaneous farewell to 8 and Z4 feels like more than just a new product orientation – it is the quiet end of a chapter that once defined the romantic side of BMW. For those who are still interested in BMW’s coupé series: the company’s SUV coupé siblings, the X4, has already been officially discontinued. We treated this story here.
