BMW adds a new transparency layer to its digital tools. From this month, the My BMW -App and the Mini -App will get access to personal CO2 footprint data -and in emissions from both driving and vehicle production into emissions.
According to BMW, this is one of the most sought -after insights among users. “The information in my travels is one of the most popular functions in the app,” says Dirk Wiedmann, Senior Vice President Sales Steering and Strategy, Digitization. “We are now expanding this by calculating CO2 footprint.”
What the app now shows
The update brings emissions tracking to a wider spectrum of BMW and Mini models in several European countries. The function is designed so that it works with all types of drive lines: combustion, plug-in hybrid and full electrical.
The app calculates the emissions with two main data points:
- Drive emissions -based on real driving data, which were recorded in the “My Trips” section. For petrol and diesel models, the app calculates the CO₂ output based on the fuel consumption. For EVS, it uses country-specific energy mix data from the International Energy Agency (IEA) to estimate the emissions associated with electricity consumption. It also shows how the numbers would change if green energy was used instead.
- Production emissions – This includes emissions from procurement of raw materials, logistics and vehicle assembly. BMW creates these figures with certified life cycle reviews from TÜV Rheinland, which are available at the BMW Group website as a downloadable vehicle footprint reports.
Electric vehicle comparison tool is still available
For those who still drive burning models, the app also contains a tool to simulate life with an electrical BMW. After tracking at least 200 trips with a total of over 2,000 km, the app estimates how many of these trips can be completed in a certain EV model on a single load. It also shows charging stations nearby, which are based on frequently visited destinations. Over 100,000 people had used this feature by May 2025.
Where it rolls out
The personal CO2 footprint will first be available in Germany, Austria, Belgium, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Switzerland. Compatible models include the latest BMW 1 series, 2 series, X2, X3, 5 Series (and Touring), M5, IX and Mini Cooper, Cooper C, Aceman and Countryman.
