In our review of the new iX3, we found that some expected features are not available at launch. For a luxury car, the lack of heated rear seats is a surprising mistake. However, BMW will fix this in just a few months. From March 2026, electric SUVs rolling off the assembly line in Debrecen will warm your butt as long as you tick the box on the options list.
That’s not all the iX3 has to offer. From the same month, BMW is offering roof rails for its first modern model in the Neue Klasse, which extends the comfort beyond what can be accommodated in the two load compartments. According to a company insider familiar with the Munich plans, vehicles assembled from March will also receive “new charging hardware”. However, it is unclear what this means.
From July, BMW will add new wheel designs and custom colors, while vehicles produced from November will be equipped with an improved wireless charging cradle. A far more significant upgrade is planned for March 2027, when an adaptive M suspension will be offered as an option.

There’s no word yet on ventilated seats or air suspension. You may have to upgrade to the larger iX5, which comes out next year. An even larger iX7 with three rows of seats is scheduled for release in 2027, followed by an iX6 in 2028. These three electric SUVs will likely make the iX obsolete. Consequently, the polarizing electric vehicle will be phased out in mid-2028 without a second generation.
We wouldn’t hold our breath for an opening sunroof either, as the iX3 will probably only be sold with a fixed panoramic glass roof. The iDrive controller is gone, as are separate buttons for climate control. You better get used to the new interior layout, because there will be 40 models by the end of 2027.
If you prefer to stick with the signature BMW body style, the sedan, an i3 will also be launched in 2026 alongside the eighth-generation 3 Series. Current spy images of a very first iX4 strongly suggest that a coupe SUV will also be coming out next year. An i3 Touring shouldn’t be far behind.
