It may look as if BMW is a dead horse, but a hydrogen production vehicle is in 2028. Although the identity of the model has not been announced, we have previously reported that it is probably one of the next generation. In the meantime, the current generation luxury SUV has already received fuel cell treatment, although it is not available for sale.
Up to this day, BMW presents the fourth generation model in a custom Wrap for Art Basel. While that seems like a strange step, there are some logical reasons. For the beginning, the artistic painting for the 50th anniversary of the artists. In addition, the zero emission X5 serves as a hydrogen-VIP fleet during the event.
The colorful packaging is the work of the artist Alvaro Barrington, which was created in response to an invitation from the BMW and the former art of arts car Hans Ulrich Obrist. This is the second year in a row in which the IX5 hydrogen will appear on international art fair in Switzerland. During the event that runs from June 19 to 22, it will share VIP shuttle tasks with the full electrical i7.

With regard to the future, BMW claims that the company’s hydrogen model for series production will be a new version of an existing product. This supports our conviction that it will be based on the X5 (G65) that can offer additional drive trains. Rumors suggest that a battery -operated EV is out of range together with a possible petrol engine. If you also look at the inline-six petrol and diesel engines, a plug-in hybrid and a large V8, the next X5 could have the most diverse list of a previous BMW.
The IX5 follows several hydrogen prototypes BMW has developed since the late 1970s. Early versions used burners, including V12S, before the engineers came to the conclusion that a fuel cell was more sensible. Toyota contributes to the effort, but BMW promises “different brand identities and properties”.
The hydrogen operated X5 was officially confirmed next year, which coincided with the introduction of the X5 of the next generation.
