Just when they thought that BMW M had shown to surprise us, let a bomb fall – a BMW M2 built for the desert. At least they want us to believe. On the day of the April 2025, BMW M presented the BMW M2 Dakar. It is brave, robust and completely unexpected. And yes, it is also completely wrong.
The M2 Dakar was introduced with the dramatic flair of a serious off-road start. The Instagram post from BMW said that it was “built for the toughest terrains, ready to tackle any challenge”, and at first glance it seemed completely credible. The car has a significantly increased suspension for greater ground clearance that is wrapped in massive off-road tires that look ready to dig in sand, gravel and rocks. The aggressive body includes extended fenders and a wide body kit that seems to have been drawn directly from a Dakar rally special.
But the details did not stop here. The M2 Dakar was equipped with full underbody protection, which stretched into the front bumper, a roof shelf with spare tires and auxiliary navigation lights, and the cleverly touch-in the kidney grilles was integrated. Styling is a perfect balance between imagination and functionality, whereby just enough realism leads to the fans of the second time a real individual project or a real operational project.
In many ways, it is an exciting reaction to Porsche’s 911 Dakar and Lamborghinis Huracán Sterrato cars that actually made the leap from Supercar to the sand slit. BMW to see his hat in the imaginary off-road ring with a high-ranking M2 is both funny and strange. And that makes the joke of this April joke a little. Because let’s be honest: we want this to exist. The short wheelbase of the M2, the powerful engine and the agile chassis would ensure a bad rally toy if they are properly adjusted. The contribution from BMW M even calls it “ready to tackle any challenge” and to judge the reaction of the Internet, the biggest challenge is now to convince BMW to build it.
While it is nothing more than a brilliant prank, the M2 Dakar has inflamed something real – enthusiasm. It remains to be seen whether BMW takes it and runs with it. But for the time being, the M2 Dakar only lives in our hearts, in our feed and in the dusty corner of our imagination, in which Fantasy Builds become fan favorites. [Photos: BMW M]
