BMW M2 XDrive is coming, but BMW will not kill the RWD manual M2

According to sources, BMW M is preparing to break again with its first all -wheel drive M2. The model is referred to as M2 XDrive and is expected to enter production in August 2026, especially without the “competitive badge”. While adding XDrive to the M2 appears like a large shift, the step follows the precedent defined by the M3 and M4, which both offer the M xDrive system with which the driver can switch between return and all-wheel drive.

However, the greatest news is not just the introduction of AWD – it is the fact that BMW does not yet give up manual gear. While the M2 XDRIVE is only available with an eight-speed automatic transmission, BMW continues to offer the M2 standard rear-wheel drive with a six-speed manual. Previous reports indicated that the RWD M2 could be outside on the way to the way, but it seems that BMW understands that not everyone is ready to exchange the driver’s commitment for additional power and grip.

The weight compromise: a heavier but more gripper M2?

As with any AWD conversion, the addition of XDRIVE is supplied with a weight penalty. In the past, the BMW M XDRIVE system adds between 50 and 75 kg (110-165 LBS), which means that the M2 XDRIVE with over £ 1,800 kg) can tip over to the scales-special that the G87 m2 is already heavier than its predecessor. For some, this additional weight may be a dealbreaker, but others may see it as a worthwhile compromise for the improved grip, acceleration and user -friendliness in less ideal conditions.

Make expectations: a more effective M2?

One of the biggest questions related to the M2 XDrive is how much strength it will get. If BMW follows the pattern defined by its larger M-siblings, the AWD system can enable the M2 to use its torque output in full, similar to the XDRIVE models of the M3/M4 competition, which produce 650 Nm (479 LB-FT). With the upcoming M2 -CS, which supposedly presses around 522 hp (530 hp), it would not be surprising if the XDRIVE version receives a similar service. Combine this additional performance with all-wheel drive, and the result could be the fastest M2-a car that follows the line like never before.

Design: No serious changes are expected

If you expect a drastic redesign accompany the introduction of XDrive, think about it again. Sources indicate that BMW does not plan any major visual changes for the M2, which means that the AWD version probably looks almost identical to its counterpart in the rear wheel drive. Nevertheless, BMW could introduce smaller optimizations such as a unique badge or subtle styling notices to differentiate the XDRIVE model.

With regard to the lifespan of the current generation M2 (G87), reports show that production is expected to be completed in July 2029.
