BMW officially confirms the second generation X7

Although we have spoken about a new X7 for a while, we had to wait for official confirmation to this day. Deep in a mixture of sales and financial figures in connection with the results of the first quarter of 2025 are news about the Luxobarge of the next generation. BMW says that it has provided more F&E financing for the development of its future flagship -SUV.

As expected, the Bavarian brand remains determined by the next X7. However, we have a good authority that it bears the internal code name “G67”. Sources near Munich claim that series production will begin in August 2027. This would start the BMW’s largest SUV after the next X5 (due in 2026), but before the X6 (expected in 2028).

We have only seen spy shots of the upcoming X5, but they show that the new class design language will even influence Clar-based models. The same should apply to the second generation X7. Like its smaller sibling, the new three-row SUV is expected to generate a purely electrical derivative that is based on the same platform as its ice-powered siblings.

The IX7 will probably take over the gene6 batteries and engines, which BMW will debut in September with the new IX3, its first modern NEE model. The zero emission X7 could be among the six EVs that the company wants to produce in Spartanburg by the end of the decade. We have also heard that an electric X7 from Alpina, which is internally referred to as “G69”, is in development.

The “S68” V8 is offered in at least two models for those who prefer gasoline engines. One should wear the BMW Roundel and the other new alpina logo. However, the stricter emission regulations ensure whether an eight-cylinder X7 is offered in Europe. The six-cylinder “B58” is practically guaranteed, and plug-in hybrids and a diesel version are also expected.

Once again, a complete M variant seems unlikely. Instead, expect gas and electrical M performance versions as X7 M60 XDRIVE and IX7 M70 XDrive. The rumored alpina model could be available in three flavors: X7 40 XDrive, X7 60 XDrive and IX7 100 XDrive. The latter may press almost 900 hp.

If the plans do not change, BMW is expected to produce the second generation X7 by the end of 2034.
