BMW overtakes Tesla in February EV sales all over Europe

BMW has overtaken Tesla in sales of electric vehicles all over Europe and presented a significant shift in the zero emission car market of the old continent. According to new data from the automotive research company Jato Dynamics, BMW and Mini sold almost 19,000 battery-electric vehicles in February, which exceeded Tesla’s total amount of Tesla, which went back to less than 16,000 units, a decrease of 44 percent compared to the previous year. In fact, the Tesla market share fell to 9.6 percent in February, the lowest level for this month in five years.

In contrast, BMW has steadily expanded its electrical offers and now benefits from one of the most comprehensive BEV portfolios from conventional car manufacturers. BMW attracts both loyal customers and new EV adopters with the models that range from entry class IX1 to the flagship i7 and the high-performance I4 M50. The figures in February position BMW directly behind the Volkswagen Group, which led the European market with almost 20,000 BEV registrations a month, an increase of 180 percent compared to the previous year.

Overall, the European EV market is growing quickly. Battery electric vehicles made up 15.4 percent of all new car registrations in February, compared to 11.5 percent in the same month of the previous year. In the first two months of 2025, BEV sales rose by 28.4 percent and made more than seven in the overall market.

However, not all regions contributed equally to growth. While Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands made all double -digit profits in the sale of electric cars, France recorded a slight decline. In large parts of Europe, the demand for the new cars was soft as a whole. In February, total registrations fell by 3 percent. Nevertheless, electric vehicles continue to share if the combustion models decrease. Petrol and diesel cars now only make up 38 percent of the market, 48.4 percent a year ago.

In the meantime, Chinese car manufacturers also feel their presence. Brands such as BYD, Polestar and Saics MG exceeded Tesla’s performance, whereby combined Chinese BEV sales exceeded Tesla for the month. In the first two months of 2025, Saic alone sold over 30,000 vehicles in Europe compared to 19,046 units from Tesla in the same period.

BYD is also prepared for a European offensive with plans for the construction of two factories in order to maintain the expected growth. In the meantime, BMW is also in the process of revising its electrical line -up with the upcoming new class family from new class, which gives us the IX3 Electric Crossover at the end of the year. A total of six new EVs from BMW are expected within two years.
