The M Hybrid V8 started its perseverance in the IMSA season 2023 before it came to the WEC a year later. The flagship model from BMW M Motorsport will compete at both championships in 2025 and will continue to do so “in the coming years”. The race stage of the German luxury brand made this commitment. However, long-term participation in the hypercar category will not contain the BMW M-Team RLL in the IMSA series.
At the end of the season, the BMW M Motorsport and Bobby Rahal team will separate according to a 17-year partnership. Since the two sides achieved 24 wins and over 100 podiums, the two sides have had. Remarkable highlights include back-to-back victories in the 24 hours of Daytona in 2019 and 2020 with the M8 GTE in the GTLM class. The M3 GT had previously received five GT class titles in the 2010 and 2011 seasons.
It remains unclear who will replace the BMW M -Team RLL for 2026 and beyond to drive the M -Ybrid -V8. However, an announcement is planned “at a later date”. Without revealing details, BMW M Motorsport is still interested in continuing his cooperation with the Bobby Rahal team. According to Andreas Roos, head of BMW M Motorsport:
“Although our joint IMSA racing program ends, we are very interested in continuing to expect the BMW M -Team RLL as a strong partner in North America in other areas. Discussions in this regard have not yet been completed.”
The M Hybrid V8 has achieved moderate success. It won the 6-hour race in Watkins Glen in his debut-Imsa season in 2023. A year later, it achieved a podium in the 6 hours of Fuji in WEC. In both series, the endurance racing car has so far claimed four pole positions and three podiums in 2025.
In addition to the competition, the Mybrid V8 was also the 20th official BMW Art Car, which was designed by the artist Julie Mehretu, born in Ethiopia. It is regrettable that the WEC and IMSA regulations do not require road special for road traffic. If this had been the case, enthusiasts might have finally received the BMW super sports car that they have been dreaming of for decades.
