BMW Vision New Class Designer Join Xiaomi

Xiaomi’s thrust into the world of electric vehicles has just received a large design boost. The Chinese Tech-Riese recruited Kai Langer, a former BMW design leader with over two decades of experience in the design of some of the most striking and future-oriented models in Munich’s portfolio. Langer confirmed the news about his LinkedIn profile: Writing:

“After more than two decades within the BMW group and many astonishing projects and responsibilities, I had the pleasure of making the step into a new challenge. From August 1st, I will join one of the most progressive and emerging Big Tech players in the world,” he added. “Xiaomi, already on the market for technology and entertainment electronics, and with a moon -rocking debut in the automotive industry, your business is increasing and gives me the chance to be a strong part of it. I am very curious about the possibilities that are passed on to create a brilliant future …”

From BMW I to Xiaomi EVS

Langer’s exact role in Xiaomi remains publicly undefined, only listed as a customer / brand / product on its LinkedIn page. In view of its design trunk tree and its growing EV set up by Xiaomi, it is generally assumed that it will take on an important role in the company’s electric car department. This is not a small appointment. Langer played a crucial role in the development of BMW’s electrification design language. It was deeply involved in the design of the BMW i3 and i8 – two of the earliest and most famous electric vehicles in the brand – and recently held the creative leadership of the Vision NEE class concepts, which continues the future direction of BMW in electrification and sustainability.

In fact, Langer has designed almost every large electrical concept car from BMW in recent years. This includes the BMW I Vision Circular, a fully recyclable, compact urban concept and the BMW I Vision Dee, which shows advanced digital functions such as head-up displays with full and emotional AI interaction.

Last, in October 2024, Langer was appointed head of the Mini interior architecture and expanded his influence on the brands of the BMW Group. Previously, he worked as a creative director for BMW Group Design from 2016 and was promoted for BMW I in 2019.

Stay in Munich, join former colleagues

Langer will remain in Munich, where Xiaomi has expanded his vehicle paws quietly. The company opened a special research and development center for electric vehicles in Bavaria this year. This center is led by another BMW veterans-Hudolf Dittrich-, who came to Xiaomi after a 15-year career at BMW 2024 and recently monitored projects for small band series from 2021 to 2024.

Xiaomi’s decision to support its F&E efforts in Germany speaks volumes about his ambitions. Xiaomi is clearly in the heart of the global automotive design and engineering community, and clearly wants to marry the most modern Chinese technology with European car expertise.
