BMW Welt organizes the skytop and speedtop under the same roof

BMW has exposed itself to a lot of criticism for its current design language, but only a few people have something negative to say about this duo. The basis for skytop and speedtop was already solid because both are based on the 8 series. The Bavaria Targa and the shooting brake couple are built on the M8 chassis, but have a completely tailor -made body. For the first time, both cars are exhibited under the same roof at the BMW world in Munich.

BMW group leader from Design Adrian van Hoydonk went to Instagram Share pictures of the breathtaking cars. While the skytop is already sold out, a few construction flashes are available for the speedtop. How for the price? BMW will not say, but the car is supposedly € 500,000, about the same as the convertible when orders were open. Production is limited to only 120 units: 70 convertibles and 50 cars.

Apart from the separation of half a million euros, the owners have to accept a compromise: no car has rear seats. Nevertheless, anyone who spends this type of money can easily afford a more practical tour or SUV. The skytop and speedtop are aimed at the richest customers of BMW that are willing to issue Rolls-Royce money for a BMW.

And yet these are not even the most expensive BMWs that have ever been made. The 3.0 CSL based on the M4 CSL allegedly had a sticker price of € 750,000. Limited to 50 units, it remains the most powerful inline-six car that has ever been built by the brand. Another special M car could be on the horizon. Sylvia Neubauer, vice president of customers, brands and sales at BMW M, told BMWblog that the M department had secured a slot for a future limited series.

The production of the Speedtop does not begin until the end of 2026. Like the skytop, it is officially sold in the USA due to high homologation costs that would already hire fragile profit margins. Similar to the 3.0-CSL, these special M8 could still make it state under exemptions for show and display exceptions. Nevertheless, it is unlikely that the owners often drive them due to their rarity. If you attract kilometers, the resale value could damage and many buyers will only treat these cars as investments.

It is still unclear whether retro-modern styling of these cars will influence the mainstream line-up of BMW. The brand is about to introduce its new class design language with prototypes from IX3 and i3, which indicate a smoother, cleaner body. Less folds and angles, similar to the skytop and speedtop, could signal a design shift. We hope that part of this exclusive flair will move to the cars that regular buyers can afford.
