BMW M2 CS scored almost the top speed during the Nurburgring record

The standard -BMW M2 is equipped with an electronically ruling 155 km/h (250 km/h), but the G87 can achieve a much higher speed. Choose the driver’s optional M driver package and the sports coupé in the rear wheel drive reaches 285 km/h. If you want the digital speedometer to climb even higher, you have to climb the new M2 -CS. Competition sport can break through the barrier of 300 km/h by reaching 302 km/h. Mind you, this figure is still electronically limited.

During the record-breaking run in the Nürburgring, the M2-CS almost reached the claimed maximum speed. Towards the end of the hot round, the BMW M development engineer Jörg Weidinger met 298 km/h. A few more seconds of the straight would have been sufficient for the Hardcore M2 to meet his specifications.

It is a remarkable performance for a “compact” car that exceeds its rivals of Ingolstadt. As a refreshment, the Audi RS3 hits a top speed of 290 km/h if it is equipped with the RS Dynamic Package Plus. The M2 CS now plays in the big leagues and almost fits the top speed of larger BMW M models. Cars like the M4 CSL, M5 CS and M8 are still a bit faster, but the M2 is not far back.

As shown in the shots below, Jörg Weidinger has never initiated the eighth course of the car while ranging the green hell. He reached the highest speed during the 7: 25.5 round in seventh gear. Why? The final passage is usually more reserved for fuel efficiency than for the full performance. The BMW M development engineer certainly did not pursue efficiency. He chased the lap time.

Nevertheless, fuel consumption is not bad. BMW quotes 10 liters per 100 kilometers in the WLTP combination cycle, which leads to a reasonable 23.5 MPG. In view of the type of car, the reach of this number is necessary. A more balanced alternative could be the M240i, which offers a strong performance with better efficiency at a better price.

A thirstierer M2 could be on the way because BMW is considering an XDRIVE version that would add additional weight. A CSL variant is also possible, a fat compared to the RWD model. At around four years in the second generation M2 life cycle, BMW M engineers still have time to further refine the G87 formula.
