BMW X5 G78 planned for China. Arrives in 2027

These spy shots have shown that BMW works hard when preparing the X5 of the fifth generation. The new Luxobarge will appear as a “G65” next year, and now we hear that it doesn’t come alone. Munich plans a China-exclusive derivative called “G78”. It would be the latest in a long series of models that were specially developed for the largest internal market in the company.

Let us remember that the current generation X5 “G05” has a Chinese equivalent in the “G18”. His successor will probably follow the same formula by expanding the wheelbase for a greater legroom in the back. BMW models that are only sold in China usually have a nicer interior, especially for rear residents. The X1 and X3 have longer cycling bases, as well as the 2 Series sedan with Gran coupĂ©, 3 -series and 5 Series.

An insider from the Bimmer Post The forums have a good authority that the X5 “G78” will enter production in January 2027. It would arrive a few months after the global model, since the “G65” allegedly hit the assembly line in August 2026. For the first time, both X5 aromas will receive purely electrical versions while staying on the Clar platform. Although the SUVs are recorded in the proven basics, the SUVs inherit gene6 batteries and engines of the new class models.

Apart from the versions powered by petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and battery-operated drive drive, the X5 will introduce fuel cell technology. BMW plans to introduce its first hydrogen model for series production in 2028. Although the name of the vehicle has not been announced, our sources show that the model in question is based on the next generation X5. It is unlikely that China’s “G78” receives hydrogen treatment.

The next X5 will be among the last new BMWs that offer V8 performance, but we are not sure whether the 4.4-liter engine with two turbo all over the world will survive. The exertion of emission regulations could significantly hinder the availability of the V8 in Europe, where you can no longer receive eight-cylinder 7 series. The S68 could survive on the old continent through electrification, as the plug-in hybrid M5 shows.
