BMWS are now autonomous during production autonomously

The process of manufacturing a BMW was only a lot of futuristic. From this week, new BMW X1 and X2 models will be fully autonomous due to the production process. This innovation significantly increases production efficiency and is quickly introduced worldwide.

Imagine this: A brand new BMW X1 leads from the assembly hall through the “short test course” and into the end area of the Leipzig plant. This is now a reality for most new BMW X1 and X2 models (as well as for the Mini -Landsmann) that is progressing.

In addition to the X1 and X2 in Leipzig, this technology is used for the BMW 5 and 7 Series in Dingolfing. In the complex, new vehicles – without a driver – drive a route of more than one kilometer, from the two assembly rooms to the “short test course” to the finishing of the system.

This innovation is made possible by sensors that are installed along the route and create the largest Lidar infrastructure in Europe. The system is based on an externally generated ambient model and an external movement planner. Regardless of the device options of a vehicle, the automated movements are controlled by a state-of-the-art cloud architecture.

Important aspects of this technology were developed by the Swiss company Embotech AG, with which the BMW Group was working early on through its venture client unit, the BMW launch garage.

“The automated driving behavior optimizes our production process and provides considerable efficiency gains for our logistics. For this reason, we will quickly introduce this technology in our production network. “

The Leipzig plant plans to introduce automated driving for around 90% of the BMW and Mini models built there, whereby Oxford 2025 will follow. This additional efficiency becomes a crucial role in the production of the new J01 Mini Cooper and J05 Mini play Aceman EVS next to the rest of the ICE Mini Cooper area.

With a view to the BMW Group, the BMW Group aims to expand its automated driving technology for driving technology to other production areas, including vehicles through test zones and external sales areas. Production and development experts work together to refine the technology in your own house, with increasing use of interior vehicle systems in order to finally supplement and support external sensors.
