BMW’s China-only long-wheelbase iX3 arrives ahead of a 2026 launch

Following the launch of the new iX3, BMW’s reborn Neue Klasse range is expanding rapidly. In addition to an i3 sedan and a possible iX4 in 2026, a third model is on the way. However, this will be exclusive to China. The long-wheelbase iX3, teased a few months ago, will be built at the Shenyang plant and is expected to go on sale next year.

In the meantime, BMW is putting the finishing touches on the stretched iX3. It is testing the electric vehicle in parts of the world where the electric crossover is not actually sold. The model, codenamed “NA6,” is currently undergoing final evaluation at the Nürburgring and will also undergo high-speed testing at other European locations. However, the extended version is not offered on the continent.

Tested at the Nürburgring

BMW tests efficiency and driving dynamics with prototypes on the ring. In vehicles tested in China, engineers concentrate on comfort. Even if the details remain limited, the extended wheelbase should result in significantly more legroom in the rear.

The global iX3 has a wheelbase of 2,897 millimeters (114 inches). How much stretch should you expect? For reference, the gasoline-powered X3 “G48” sold in China is 111 mm (nearly 4.4 inches) longer between the axles than the global “G45” model.

Specific features for iX3 long wheelbase models

China’s new iX3 is also expected to feature upgrades over the international version. On the long-wheelbase X3, the rear seat angle increases by four degrees to allow for a more relaxed seating position. BMW also adds a thigh support extension and a wireless charging pad integrated into the center armrest. The Chinese-market X3s even offer crystal controls borrowed from the X5 and X7, as well as ambient lighting on the rear doors and illuminated threads in the panoramic glass roof.

Expect similar improvements to the long-wheelbase iX3, with the rear seats offering a more luxurious and comfortable experience. A unique, two-tone upholstery for the stretched version wouldn’t be a surprise either.

Currently, BMW has only confirmed localized driver assistance and automation features co-developed with Momenta. During the third-quarter earnings call earlier this month, CEO Oliver Zipse said the vehicle will be “enriched by digital solutions made in China.”

Production begins in May 2026

Production of the Chinese iX3 will reportedly begin in May 2026, initially in the 50L xDrive configuration. The 30L and 40L xDrive versions are expected to follow a few months later, with a high-performance M60L xDrive due in mid-2027. An X3 M with an extended wheelbase is unlikely.
