Only 80 units are made, and each uses real parts from the largest boxer engine from BMW. BMW Motorrad has done some wild things over the years, but this could exceed the list – at least in terms of kitchen equipment. In a limited run of only 80 handmade units, a new espresso machine called the Big Coffee Boxer is available, which is made from the actual components of the 1.8-liter Boxer engine of the BMW R 18.
In cooperation with the German Espresso manufacturer ECM and the coffee roaster Dallmayr, based in Munich, the Big Coffee Boxer Mechanical Engineering and Coffee Culture is combined into an incredibly specific machine. Whether that makes sense or not depends on how much you love both motorcycles and espresso.
Designed around the R 18 engine because it is the R 18 engine

This is not a gimmick. The machine contains original parts from the massive two-cylinder engine of the R 18-most powerful boxer Twin BMW has ever put it in production. It is the same 1802 ccm unit that delivers 89 hp and 120 LB-FT torque in BMWS Heritage Cruiser, The R 18.
ECM not only hit a few valve covers on a box. The core of the machine is based on the actual engine shape. From the cylinder heads to the silhouette, this espresso machine looks like something that you would expect to see in a frame and not to sit on a kitchen counter. It is located on a specially built metal stand with a floating drip shell, which gives it the same sculptural presence that you would find in a well -performed customer -specific bicycle building.
Real espresso markets, not just for the show

There is a serious espresso setup under the exterior inspired by Boxer. ECM equalized the Big Coffee Boxer with an E61 brew group, a proven system that was first introduced by Faema in 1961 and is still preferred in high-end machines today. In the ECM version, the E61 unit contains a patented stainless steel brewery that is designed for consistency and durability.
Further specifications are:
- Two independent water circuits for pulling shots and steam milk at the same time
- A quiet rotation pump
- A digital shot -timer who follows exactly the brewing time
Coffee partners: roast dallmayrs ‘Italian Vibe’

BMW and ECM have not stopped with the machine. For the full experience, they have teamed up with Dallmayr coffee OHG, one of the oldest and most respected coffee roasters in Germany. The proposed pairing is a mixture that is referred to as an Italian atmosphere and is created specifically to supplement the taste profile of traditional espresso drinks, which are prepared with the large coffee boxer.
Price, availability and for whom it really is

The price for the Big Coffee Boxer is € 7,900 (including 19% VAT). That is around £ 6,860 or 8,600 USD, depending on the exchange rates. It is sold exclusively via the exclusive line dealers from ECM, and as soon as the 80 units are spoken, there are no more plans for more.
There is no question that this machine is not for everyone. But if you are the type of person who already has an individual BMW R 18-or the craftsmanship behind mechanical objects in limited production-this is one of the most interesting espresso machines that have ever been built. And it’s not a novelty. It is functional, rare and deeply connected to the heir of one of the most famous engines from BMW.
