Genesis Wingback Wagon could challenge the BMW M5 Touring

Genesis released some “Magma” concepts a little over a week ago. While a supercar and a souped-up EV SUV grabbed plenty of headlines, there was another car that perhaps appealed to a more unorthodox subset of automotive enthusiasts. Based on the full-size Genesis G90, the Genesis Wingback was created, a station wagon that can at least visually be on a par with the fast BMW M5 Touring.

Exploring the Genesis Wingback

The Genesis Wingback is pretty sparse on details, but we’ll reveal what we can. Underneath is more or less a Genesis G90, the brand’s full-size luxury sedan. Similarities to the M5 Touring include all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission. However, this car probably has about half as much power as the M5 Touring – at least when it comes with the G90’s standard engines. The dimensions also remain true to the G90, on which the car is based. That means a wheelbase of 125 inches (3175 mm) and an overall length of 207 inches (5258 mm). To illustrate: That’s around seven inches longer than the M5 Touring.

Around the rear, stacked quad exhaust pipes, widened wheel arches, an aggressive roof spoiler and mostly new bodywork in general make the Wingback unmistakable from its G90 brother. There is no confusion on the side either. New vented fenders look more like those on the Porsche Taycan than anything with a Genesis badge. Split five-spoke wheels also look like something you would find on a BMW product. Specifically, perhaps the last generation BMW M2 CS? The wingback also turns heads at the front, thanks to its slimmer look, complemented by swooping surfaces and spoilers.

Could the M5 Touring Rival make it into production?

While Genesis hasn’t announced exact production plans for the Wingback, it’s not entirely out of the question. Several sources claim that Genesis is not entirely against the idea. “We are really committed to these designs,” said Manfred Harrer, head of the Genesis and Performance Tech Unit in Hyundai Motor Group’s research and development department Motor trend in November. The same Motor trend The article refers to “a Genesis source” as “a reference to V8 development.” The source stated that the V8 would be used specifically for high-performance vehicles, including the top-of-the-line “Magma” vehicles that best embody the brand’s performance. In the most radical sense, this includes a mid-engine super sports car.

No matter whether you Do If you want one, we recommend you let Genesis know about it. Finally, a worst-case scenario feels like a repeat of the M3 Touring disappointment to us; However, the rest of the world is getting a super-cool station wagon that the US isn’t getting because the manufacturer can’t make a compelling business case for it. At the moment there are hardly any competitors for the M5 Touring. Whether Genesis will be added to the list soon or not remains to be seen. But we have to admit: we kind of like what we see.
