Mercedes reverses the course: the V8 returns to challenge BMW M

Mercedes-AMG has taken a brave step to bring the V8 back and to react to overwhelming customer demand and market deals. This decision follows widespread dissatisfaction with the reduced four-cylinder plug-in hybrid setup in the latest AMG C63, which despite its impressive edition did not record the essence of AMG’s performance. The return of the V8 is a clear recognition that the transition to smaller, hybrid -supported drive strands did not listen to enthusiasts. The four-cylinder hybrid system of the C63, which produces 671 hp and 752 LB-FT torque, fought to win traditional AMG buyers. His lack of emotional noises and the weight of the battery contributed to disappointing sales, which forced Mercedes to rethink his strategy.

While AMG initially defended the move, reports now indicate that the brand is preparing a revised C63 for 2026, which probably contains a newly developed V8. However, Mercedes-AMG did not officially confirm these plans. What has been confirmed is the return of the V8 in the upcoming CLE 63, and many expect the same engine to find the way into other models, including the C-Class sedan.

A new version of the V8 formula

Mercedes-Benz AMG C63

Instead of simply bringing back the previous 4.0-liter V8 with two turbochargers, AMG follows a new approach by introducing a crankshaft configuration with a flat level. This marks a departure from the traditional crank design design, which has been defined by AMGS eight cylinder engines for years. The advantages? The sharper gas reaction, a higher redline and improved efficiency in packaging, so that the engine fits in platforms that are not originally designed for a V8.

However, this change could also mean that AMG’s deep, strict exhaust grade is replaced by a higher, more aggressive tone. To counteract this, Mercedes plans to integrate artificial sound enlargement into the cabin.

The reborn V8 is expected to contain mild support for hybrid via an integrated starter generator in the gear. This setup not only offers additional performance, but also the efficiency to meet modern emission standards. BMW offers a similar setup in its six cylinder and V8 engines.

BMW MS persistent commitment to the V8

BMW S68 V8

Mercedes’s decision to double the V8 reflects the continued BMW M investment in the S68 4.4-liter V8 with two turbochargers. In contrast to AMG, BMW has made no attempts to reduce its performance flagships to ensure that its V8 is certified for regulations for Euro 7. The S68 is currently making models such as XM, X5 M and X6 M and increases BMW’s conviction that high-performance V8 still has a place on the market. Future S -SUVs will probably also wear the S68 under the bonnet.
