New images show the production car up close

BMW gave us wallpaper material in mid-2024 when it unveiled the stunning Concept Skytop. A few months later, the company announced plans for a production version limited to just 50 examples. However, a real reveal of the M8-based Targa beauty in its final form is yet to happen. Since there doesn’t seem to be an actual premiere planned, we’ll settle for the next best thing. These are the first official pictures, taken in front of the BMW Welt in Munich.

One of the first customer cars confirms that the production-ready Skytop is almost a copy of the concept. You have to look closely to see the changes, such as the addition of parking sensors. The cap that covers the towing eye was already present in the concept, as were the windshield wipers. Fun fact: The headlights are the slimmest ever installed on a BMW.

Elsewhere, discreetly integrated winglets in the beltline replace the conventional door handles. It is the first BMW production car to adopt this subtle design. The upcoming Speedtop will use the same setup, and future models like the next X5 and X7 will also have it, including on their rear doors.

Not surprisingly, the turbine-style wheels were also carried over from the concept. At the back, the ultra-thin taillights and the double oval exhaust tips should look familiar by now. Overall, the Skytop evokes strong Z8 vibes, just in a much larger format, as the targa-top convertible is based on the M8.

In keeping with the concept, the Skytop’s interior remains a two-seater, unlike the regular 8 Series with its more practical rear seats. The reddish-brown leather covers almost every surface, complemented by crystal accents in the switchgear. A “One of Fifty” badge further underlines the exclusivity of the vehicle.

BMW is showing the Skytop without a roof, but there is a removable, leather-covered targa top that the owner can store in a special compartment in the trunk. It’s probably best not to drive in the rain, but that hasn’t deterred buyers. The 50 units were sold out just a few months after the market launch.

As for its shooting brake brother, the Speedtop won’t go into production until the end of next year. The sold-out car will be slightly less exclusive with 70 units planned, but the price was similar at an unconfirmed 500,000 euros. In terms of performance, all 120 vehicles feature the S63 engine from the previous M8 model.
