BMW introduces the 2nd generation 2 series Gran Coupé with higher refinement levels and more standard equipment. The prices remain relatively stable for the basic models and keep the 2 Series Gran Coupé in its position as an entry-level model of the brand in the USA. The biggest question, however, is: what is new among them?
2 series Gran Coupé – what is new and what is not
To answer this, we have to dive deeply into the knowledge of the BMW enthusiast. The new 2GC is based on a modified UKL platform that is now known as a FAAR. The X1, X2 and Mini-Landsmann follows, all of which share the soon ubiquitous BMW-based platform with front-wheel drive. What is the big deal with the FAAR platform? On the one hand, the ability to support ice, hybrid or EV drive lines makes an essential feature in today’s automobile landscape for BMW.
The platform also introduces newly discovered refinement and insulation levels and enables more advanced driver aids. In models such as X1, X2 and Countryman, we have seen this for a better, conformer journey, quieter huts and generally a more comfortable experience.
The FAAR-based 2GC also brings new technologies with a revised series of four-cylinder engines and a 7-speed dual clutch transmission, which has already proven in X1, X2 and Countryman.
2025 BMW 2 series Gran Coupé: Performance Upgrades & Downgrades
We discussed upgrades of the architecture ourselves, but there are also improvements in standard equipment. For example, BMW from North America makes the adaptive M -suspension standard on the M235i to improve performance and sharpen the handling in all models.
The focus of BMW on driving dynamics continues with revised suspension components, a rigid chassis and an optimized steering for improved mobility and comfort. In the X1 and X2, this has led to a stricter, more precise steering, which made it possible to trust the curve.
We have found that the new 7-speed steptronic dual clutch transmission in daily driving in X1 and X2 is smoother, although the layers are not as fast as before. We will reserve the final judgment on the 2GC version, since BMW will probably continue to optimize its performance through software updates.
The M235 XDRIVE Gran Coupé delivers an even sharper performance, with the 2.0-liter engine producing 312 hp and 295 LB-FT torque. The all-wheel drive system, M-specific tuning, the mechanical differential lock and the sports boost function help to make the driving experience more appealing.
The latest functions for BMW driver’s aid are standard and offer semi-automatic engineering and improved parking functions.
But there is a remarkable disadvantage: Due to the new torque restriction of the new 7-speed dual clutch transmission, the engine on the M235i area was slightly downgraded. While the first generation produced 301 hp and 331 LB-FT torque, the new 2-seater gran coupé now offers 312 hp, but is listening to a torque that was 36 LB-FT on 295 LB-FT.
Nevertheless, the new 2GC meets 0-62 miles per hour in 4.9 seconds and identical to the previous model. This is interesting because we saw the same torque reduction in the mini-state man JCW and lost 0.3 seconds in the sprint from 0 to 62 miles per hour.

The exterior of the Gran Coupé has always deviated from typical BMW proportions due to its architecture on the front. Nevertheless, some BMW design cues for the Hallmark remain: an elongated silhouette, a wide front grill and a distinctive rear. The increased length of the new model (179.2 inches) and the height (56.9 inches) offer passengers and freight a little more space.
Inside, the 2 Series Gran Coupé offers a refined atmosphere with exclusively leather-free upholstery and redesigned heated sports seats. The driver -oriented layout, which is highlighted by the BMW, focuses on the technology, as can be seen in X1 and X2. The standard functions include BMW Live Cockpit Plus, a Harman/Kardon sound system, wireless charging and BMW Digital Key Plus, which enables a smartphone-based entry.
A little thing, but something we found interesting: BMW made the M2 part of the M235i badge larger on the new car.
