One of the most influential chapters in the modern history of the BMW Group was officially closed today when Dr. After almost four decades, Norbert Reithofer resigned from the company as chairman of the supervisory authority. The announcement was made at the end of the 105th annual meeting of BMW AG and was the end of the transformative leadership of Reithofer, which fundamentally deformed the global position, the product portfolio and the technological orientation of the brand.
“After 38 years, it is time for me to say goodbye to the BMW group. It was an honor to be part of this extraordinary company,” said Reithofer. “Together we managed enormous challenges and celebrated incomparable successes. I am firmly convinced that the BMW group will continue to follow its own unique BMW path.”
A long BMW trip

Reithofers BMW trip began in 1987 in maintenance planning. At the turn of the millennium, he had taken on important leadership roles, including head of global production. In 2006 he competed as chairman of the board of directors Helmut Panne Pelleke, led the company through the financial crisis from 2008 to 2009 and a growth path that tripled global sales.
In 2000, BMW was limited. The X5 had just debuted the brand with the NO 1 series, 2 series or 6 series models from the brand. Mini and Rolls-Royce had not yet started under BMW Stewardship. At that time, BMW only sold 822,000 vehicles annually. Today, the BMW group inlay sells 2.5 million units per year in a significantly expanded portfolio, including nine X models.
The conversion of BMW by a niche premium car manufacturer to the world’s largest premium car manufacturer was powered by Reithofer’s Kühner Strategic Vision. His number one strategy laid the foundation for global expansion, especially in China, and brought BMW into new technological boundaries.
From efficient dynamics to electrification

Reithofer’s leadership was defined by innovation. He introduced the efficient dynamics and prioritized fuel efficiency and lower emissions without affecting driving dynamics. His most future-oriented step came with the creation of BMW I, which launched the full electrical i3 and plug-in hybrid i8 in 2014 in 2014.
Despite the skepticism of moves such as downsizing engines with turbocharging and the introduction of front-wheel drive for models such as the 2 Series Active Tourer, these strategies have been successful since then. BMW has sold almost 600,000 vehicles based on its architecture on the front, which today underpins bestsellers such as the 1 series, X1 and X2.
By 2024, BMW had also become the most successful premium-EV brand in Germany and exceeded competitors in electrical sales-proof of Reithofer’s long-term commitment to sustainability and future mobility.
Continuity in leadership: Dr. Nicolas Peter occurs
The Supervisory Board has Dr. Nicolas Peter nominated as the successor to Reithofer. Peter, who worked as a Chief Financial Officer of BMW from 2017 to 2023, brings with it more than three decades in the financial and strategic management of BMW. After observing an obligatory two -year cooling period, he was officially appointed today to ensure a smooth transition from the leadership.
