In Auto Shanghai there are 42 BMWs and minis, where the group organizes its largest exhibition stand in the world. While everyone has their favorite models, we can all agree on which car gains the beauty competition. The M8 has never looked so pretty, and this is because the skytop is far more special. Sure, a really tailor -made interior would have done it even better, but this is still an extremely desirable roadster.
At least 50 people also thought because BMW had no problems finding customers for the production run from Skytop. Although it was almost a year since we saw the concept in Concorso d’Elanza Villa d’Este, the final version is still missing in action. However, a disguised prototype that was caught at the Nürburgring suggests that the street model is not far from the show car.

BMW presents the skytop without Targa top with two manually removable panels that are wrapped in leather. When the red -brown roof is removed, the parts are kept in a special area of the freight compartment. Apart from the special body, which is reminiscent of Z8 and 507, the car has the thinnest headlights of any model that makes the Bavarian brand today. It also has a unique series of bikes that are designed in such a way that they resemble turbines.

In contrast to the M8 convertible with its rear seats, the skytop can only record one passenger. The rest of the cabin is transmitted by the donor car, but with red-brown leather, which fits the Targa top. To spice up things, BMW adds crystal accents here and there, although nothing extravagant.
We still don’t know how much the car costs and we are not sure whether we will ever find out an official communication channel. Maybe when the production version is finally debut? If not, we only have reports in which BMW set a price of € 500,000 or even more. The wealthy customers did not prevent the dotted line from signing the dotted line. The concept picked up on May 24, 2024, and BMW announced the production model less than five months later on October 11th.

Hopefully the success of the Skytop in Munich will convince higher ups to do other special cars in the future to green-light. However, the ship is probably already sailed for the 2023 Concept Touring Coupé. A clownshoe resuscitation based on the Z4 M40i would have been great, and it almost happened.
