Just last year, BMW launched the redesigned 2 Series Gran Coupe. So little changes for the 2026 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe, although it has introduced a front-wheel-drive version that trades a few thousand dollars off the sticker price to forego xDrive all-wheel drive. Otherwise, the 2026 BMW 2 Series remains unchanged for the new model year, and that’s okay. The new FWD car is the most cost-effective car with a roundel on the bonnet, making the 2 Series GC a true entry-level model.
2026 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe engine, transmission and performance

The biggest, and actually only, changes to the 2 Series Gran Coupe range come with the introduction of the front-wheel drive 228 Gran Coupe. It’s the same car as the xDrive variant, which has been available since last year. In fact, all variants of the 2026 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe are equipped with a B48 four-cylinder engine and dual-clutch automatic transmission. The 228 versions make do with 241 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Meanwhile, a more powerful M235 xDrive version increases output to 312 hp. According to BMW, the M235 can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds, which is pretty quick for the segment. Our test report on the M235 Gran Coupé reflects this mood.
2026 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe Fuel Economy and MPG

The new front-wheel-drive version of the 228 Gran Coupe achieves decent EPA-estimated fuel economy, achieving 27 mpg in the city and an excellent 39 mpg on the highway, for a total of 31 mpg. Models equipped with xDrive all-wheel drive consume a total of 30 mpg on 26 city and 38 highway routes. Not bad at all; the similar Audi A3 achieves 24/34/28. Because the M235 xDrive increases performance, you can expect a significant decrease in fuel consumption. That’s just kind of the case. The EPA estimates fuel economy at 24 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway, for a combined 27 mpg. The similar Audi S3 gets 23/31/26, although it makes slightly more horsepower.
Interior and cargo space

The 2026 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is equipped with Veganza upholstery, vegan leather that completely replaces traditional hides. While real leather isn’t available, the optional Alcantara-covered seats add a sportier, more upscale feel. It’s part of the $900 million Sport Plus package, which is pricey given the segment but still worth considering. Other notable extras include lumbar support for $450 and a heated steering wheel for $200. With 12 cubic feet of trunk space but standard 40/20/40 split-folding rear seats, the 2 GC isn’t exactly a cargo-hauling powerhouse, but it should work well for anyone shopping in the small sedan segment. 2026 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe technology and connectivity

The interior features BMW’s signature curved display setup, combining a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster with a 10.7-inch central touchscreen. Standard technology includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, integrated navigation and voice command functions – all running on the latest iDrive 9 system. For those who like a little more gimmicks, the $1,750 Technology Package adds a head-up display, a 360-degree camera, and automated parking. It also features an illuminated kidney grille and augmented reality-assisted navigation. Not bad advantages for BMW’s entry-level sedan. Annoyingly, Tech doesn’t include Remote Engine Start. You won’t pay another $1,600 for the Premium package or $300 for the standalone option. We would choose the latter.
Safety and driver assistance functions

The BMW 2 Series 2026 skimps neither on safety nor on comfort technology. Standard equipment includes frontal collision warning, active blind spot detection, lane departure warning and BMW Assist. If you opt for the technology package, some clever parking aids are added, but if you want the full semi-autonomous experience you’ll have to pay. To unlock BMW’s hands-free system, you first need the Driver Assistance Package for $500 and the Driver Assistance Professional Package for $1,700. It’s an expensive combination, but it brings cutting-edge performance to BMW’s smallest luxury coupe. We would skip it unless you plan on not adding any more options. The 2 Gran Coupe does its best work with a low sticker price.
Prices for the 2026 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe

The new 2 Series Gran Coupe starts at $39,600, and the addition of xDrive also increases the MSRP by $2,000. The cheaper front-wheel drive car is the obvious choice here unless you desperately need all-wheel drive. The Audi A3 is the clear competitor here, starting at $40,100. The car offers decent value for money, although the xDrive versions are hard to recommend over the $42,800 X1 xDrive28i. To find out which model is right for you, you mainly have to decide between fuel consumption and dynamics (2GC) or cargo space and ground clearance (X1).
2026 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe: Our opinion

While the new Gran Coupe is far from the most exciting BMW you can buy today, it’s a step forward in most areas over the first-generation car that came out about a decade ago. Better standard equipment, no noticeable loss of performance and a nice selection of options and colors make it a great entry-level BMW. However, the 2026 BMW 3 Series is a much better buy if you can manage your budget. Unfortunately, the gap between the two, base model for base model, is almost $10,000. Regardless, the 2GC is a solid car with great value for money.
